Sorry to make this sound so urgent but I can only order it tonight(long story...)
Thinking of ordering from hay for pets for the first time. Which hay would you recommend for two young girls (they are a few mths old) and how much should I get it being the first time I've ordered ( just don't want to waste money by not buying in bulk and also I don't want to waste money by not liking the hay) ? Thanks so much...:)

ive ordered 2 of their 9.5KG timothy hay before for my 10 guinea pigs and it lasted around 10-12wks

I would go with either timothy or meadow hay - or even a mixture of the two - with only two young piggies though, you may find the bigger bales wont keep that long....one bag would last ageeeeesssss!

i now order from dust free hay - only because delivery is ,much quicker and my lot seem to like it better (two of their big bales only lasts me like 4-5wks)

Hay for pets is great, i constantly order a 9.5kg bag of meadow hay for my lot. They do do a pack of samples to see if your pets like it if you wanted to try that first?

x.

I was going to order from dust free hay but they seem more expensive then hay for pets. Hay for pets don't do Timothy on its own I think they have Timothy and rye though, would that be okay?

yep that's the one - the 9.5kg bags are huge so will last quite a while with just the two youngsters - do you have any way of storing it? i only ask as hay for pets ship their hay in a plastic bag - hay doesn't last that long when stored in plastic bags so i would advise getting an old duvet cover or hessian bag to put the hay in :)

FYI: dust free hay works out at about the same price for two of their large bales as it does for two of the large bales from hay for pets ;) no difference in price - of course if you wanted a better quality hay, dust free hay do an amazing american timothy hay which is identical to oxbow/alfalfa king hay - it's lush and green, but very expensive for the amount you get!

My piigies have the Ings hay. They don't really like the meadow, but they love this one. I get the biggest bags and it lasts ages for my four.

I was about to say the opposite - I found the ings hay was the least popular! :))

I'd definitely get the samples.

This is interesting, my pigs loved the meadow hay, went for the ings second and didn't touch the timothy and rye (too stalky I think). Although it does say on the site that the palatability may vary depending on the cut and the field, so I guess it's not a certainty.

:))Thanks guys!

Ordered 2 standard bales from dust free hay( soft) but it would have worked out cheaper if I had bought more but I wanted to see how the piggys react to it first... :)

How's the stalky hay by dust free hay? Do your pigs like it? What about the soft?
I thought rye has got to many calories in it or not for little critters ( not sure about this though as picked it up somwhere on the internet..)?

Sorry about all the questions... still figuring out what pigs prefer and whats best for them :))

Hay (of most kinds - barr the alfalfa) is an essential part of your piggies diet, so you cant go too wrong with it. In my opinion (and it is just opinion) variety is the spice of life when it comes to hay, so i keep my lot on the basic meadow hay from hayforpets and then in racks they get all sorts:

- Excel hays (timothy, dried grass, camomile, Birch bark)
- Oxbow (timothy meadow, oat, botanical, orchard grass)
- ready grass
- occationally woodlands hay
- hay cookies of all sorts
- Excel cubes
- the odd (when i have a preg pig in) small handful of alfalfa as a treat but don't feed this all the time far too high in calcium

Just some ideas. All of the above are quiet expensive hays though.
