Hi,
My husband has found a farm near where he works, that sell hay by the bale, which is sooo much cheaper. I would like to know if anyone else buys it like this, whether it is a good idea to use it for the guineas or not, would there be a higher risk of them catching mites?
Hope you can advise.

I get hay like it from the pet shop and it smells lovely piggies love it too ;)

I get mine from the farm thats near us,it lasts ages and the piggies love it and its only £2.50 a bale

My vet told me RE. mites that all piggies are born with mites anyway and they live in harmony with each other (mites and piggies) until a piggy gets run down, ill etc and the balance is upscuttled leading to the mites taking over and infesting. He told me to continue using hay all through his mite treatment. I don't know how true it is but I dubiously still use hay from the farm on his advice.

My fella has improved and his hair is growing back so there may be some truth in it.

i'm convinced, will definatly get some, just have to work out where i am gonna store it. the farm sells bales for £2.50 or a better quality one for £3.00, so will get the better one.

if you can split it up and put it into black bags,or keep it in a dustbin/wheely bin thats spare?

It definately makes sense getting it in a bale, I was forever at the pet shop before, so its more economical. Just need somewhere sheltered to store it. Mines in the garage at the moment, and I separate chunks into bags to make it easier to carry around when doing all the cleaning out O0

And I thought I was doing well with £3.50 for a large bale from a farm! The nicest hay we've found so far was from Notcutts - from a local farm - but it was over £6 a bale and is about 15 miles away - husband works closer to it but is abroad at the moment. This week we ran out and I had to get some hay from the village store. it's really spiky and so dusty that I reacted to it (asthma) this evening while cleaning the hutch out.

the large bale we had from a farm 12 miles away was OK - not as nice as the Notcutts one but it was huge - I couldn't lift it myself. Although the most economical, oh was not keen because of storage. Will mention Trufflefluff's suggestions to him.

i will split it into bin bags, and we have a lean to shelter up the garden where i can put it, have no room in the shed.

Hi, I was wondering how can you tell what the quality of hay is like? and how could you tell if it was dusty besides from sneezing..? Thanks

I know what hay NOT to get; any that's full of thistles, spiky like straw, smells burnt or musty. Hay should be lovely and green & sweet smelling :)

Hay from a farm is better than most from petshops as it has been stored properly. But. It must not be kept in bin bags, it will go mouldy and be of no use to your piggies. Hay has to breathe to stay in tip top condition. For the same reason plastic bins are not a good idea as condensation can build up and again mould spores will grow. You could keep it in a plastic bin with the lid open

I get my hay from a local farm, its so much cheaper when you have lots of piggies.
I store mine in a bale bag, you can get these from somewhere that dose horse accessories, mine cost £12,
it also stops your car gettin full of hay ;)

I get my hay In a bale too :) I get it from a big pet-store (that doesnt sell animals ;)) They specialize in stuff for your garden and food, accesories etc. for your pets :) Not sure how much is costs though :)

mine has jsut been delivered from Farmer MIck he is so nice he gives me advice about growing veggies etc I get 10 hugh bags from a bale every 2 weeks occasionally I get thistles in it but its always checked before i use it and I wear rubber gloves so its easy to pick it out, wouldn't use any other

I get mine by the bale from a farm in Long Eaton £2, my lot prefer it to the posh stuff..... who am I to argue O0 ;D
