So I was wondering if anybody here had any suggestions of good hay suppliers online to order my piggies some hay in a larger quantity but still good quality. I've been just buying the oxbow Timothy hay from our pet store but it comes in such small sizes it just doesn't last long enough. I've seen suggestions for some sites but I live in the US so unfortunately I don't think I can order from any of the UK sites. I've looked into a couple sites like farmerdavepetsupply.com and smallpetselect.com, so if anybody knows if either of these are any good let me know :) Any suggestions would help! Thank you!

Hello

Sorry I know nothing about US sites as from UK....

I am going to amend the title of your thread so we can try and get some US members opinions for you.

Thank you! I wish I could shop from the UK sites though lolol so much better prices than what I've found so far here

Hi there! Lovely to meet another member from the USA!

I have heard good reports about Small Pet Select, they do sell timothy in amazingly large quantities, I believe maybe even to twenty pounds at a time?
I've never ordered from them yet, we usually find cheaper hay, as we prefer to buy it in smaller amounts, but as I said, all reviews I've heard are good for the most part. One scary note, a person found a piece of glass in some pellets by them, though personally, I would just put this off as more of a one time fluke kind of thing, I thought I would mention it!

Another possible idea to look at would be Oxbow Hay, I'm not sure how much they sell at a time, but you could try? Pretty expensive for sure though!

They both have their own websites, but if you are an Amazon Prime member, they are also available there, maybe you would get free shipping. :)

Funnily enough I actually work for Amazon :) and I have been buying the oxbow Timothy hay the whole time I've had my little guys but it's just not sold in large enough quantities... So I run out rather quick, and it is quite expensive $30 for 5lbs. Yikes!

I just got a large 50lb bale from a livestock shop nearby but my boys hate it and won't really eat it unfortunately, so I was hoping to find something similar to oxbows quality just in a higher quantity... I might go ahead and order from the small pet select for now in a 10lb and see if they like it! Thanks for warning me about the glass! I'll definitely make sure to sift through the hay if I order from them

Well, that works out perfectly then! :)):))
Hope Small Pet Select is approved by the piggies!

I am in the US too. Chewy.com has free shipping in less than 24 hours sometimes. I got a 9 pound bag of orchard oxbow for 20 bucks I think.

I just got some from KMS hayloft and my piggies love it! We tried the bluegrass hay this time and they are gobbling it up.

Ooo their prices are really really good too! How's the quality? Were you able to use all of the hay or did some need thrown out (some bad spots)? Is the shipping price reasonable? Sorry for all the questions I just wanna hurry and find a good site to order from lolol

I think the shipping was $10. I got it about a week ago so I haven’t gotten to the bottom of it yet but it all looks really good.

Hey! So happy to see another member from the USA!
I have seen good reviews from SmallPetSelect.com :tu:
I got hay one time from KMS Hayloft and the piggies loved it! But now I just get it from my local Walmart. So easy. I get a 48 oz bag for $6 and that strangely last them all month. But I only have two cavies so that might be it.

Ooo wow! I only have two as well but they go through hay like nobodies business, so I run out quick! I actually just ordered a 20lb box from small pet select so I'll keep updates on how that goes. I was going to order from kms hayloft but the shipping alone was over $30! So we'll see how this goes!

Good luck!

I've bought Oxbow timothy Hay from the local PetSmart, which was good quality hay. I've ordered from KMS Hayloft which was even better quality hay, but expensive. They are based in Washington state and I'm in Georgia, so shipping costs are a killer. Currently I'm feeding my piggies from a 10lb box of Small Pet Select timothy hay, 2nd cutting. This hay was a very vibrant green and smelled good, and my boys are really loving it. It's the best quality hay I've had and I highly recommend them.

Thank you for the response! I did order a box from small pet select earlier today because of the raving reviews and the price was very decent. I originally looked at KMS but the shipping alone was over $30 so that was hefty, and I usually give my piggies the oxbow Timothy hay but my local pet stores only carry up to 5lbs and my boys go through that so quick! I can't wait to get the SPS hay in and see if the boys like it :)

Thank you also! Great recomendation

I will be making a thread with US hay providers in for reference so keep 'them coming :)
Here are a few brands that you can get at a local store here like a Walmart or any petstore, (in case that helps?) @sport_billy

Kaytee is great, as long as you make sure to buy it in a larger bag, sometimes the smaller bags it is in too small of bits. It is fairly priced, this is what I buy for my girls! I'm finding that you can buy it bulk at Walmart, for a pretty decent price, as well, though I buy it in more medium amounts. It is available almost anywhere, Walmart, Amazon, Petstores...ect

The few times we've used Carefresh, it has also been of a nice quality. Cheap too, I believe.

Oxbow is fabulous, but expensive, we have only used in once or twice.

Hartz timothy hay, is complete rubbish, we only use in an emergency! Just a bunch of little bits and a scary amount of dust. Wouldn't want my little ones breathing in all that nasty stuff! :(

Every once and awhile you may get a not-so-great bag, but this is what I've experienced so far!

Cannot think of many others we have tried, even though I know there must be more sorry! Thank you for including a helpful thread for new USA members, even though this forum is majority UK. :)x

We get ours from small pets third cutting, fabulous hay!

All the other brands here in the pet stores, pigs won't eat it, looks like it's real old hay

I'd be interested in hearing how good the 20lb size is. I saw a few comments online saying the quality in the larger size boxes is bit inconsistent. But if it's pretty close to the quality I got from the 10lb box, which is so good that I almost want to eat it myself, then I might have to go for volume pricing in the future.

As far as 1st, 2nd and 3rd cuts of timothy hay offered by the fancier places, Small Pet Select offers a good summary. The TL;DR version:

First cut hay is cut before the hay blooms. It is very stemmy, very high in fiber but low in protein and fat. It's a good choice for an animal that needs to lose weight.

Second cut hay is leafier than first cut, with some blooms. It has a good amount of fiber, protein and fat. It's considered the "best of both worlds", and most people recommend this hay for most adult animals.

Third cut hay is very leafy and soft. It is low in fiber and high in protein and fat. It is "rich" hay, very nutrient rich, which can make your pets obese. It's a good hay for elderly pets, those that need to gain weight, to mix in with other hay to encourage eating, or as "treat" hay.
