Getting piggies soon and setting up my cage, what do you all use to put your hay in?

Here's my boys demonstrating their hay situation. They have the expensive Timothy hay in the hay bag and then cheap hay in the hay tray. Albie loves to sit in the hay tray and I find it keeps the fleece a lot cleaner having it there. It contains a lot of spilled hay and a lot of pees and poos! hay rack.webp

I'd looked at litter boxes and thought they were too high but notice you both have something to help them. That is a great help, thanks for that.

Did you make the hay bag?

I got a hay bag and then one day I noticed a pig was missing-she crawled in the hay bag and was still happily peeing an pooing in the hay as she ate. Not even sure she could have gotten out as the holes were pretty small, so I don't use it anymore out of safety concerns for my strange lil peanut Zuli
My pigs use to use the little ramp to get in but don't really anymore they just hop in and out, I only keep it there to help prevent it from tippy over when they lean on it

There are tons of free tutorials for making hay bags online if you want, also if you have Pinterest that had so many ideas

I use a seed tray (its about the size of a page of a newspaper). They love to sit and dig about in it. I'm on the lookout for something bigger but not found what I want yet.

I have got two loo rolls put through the run bars, then at the top there's a cat litter tray with it in they seem too like it! When I had my home visit I had one of those cage ball things but she told me there were several cases of piggies getting their heads stuck in the gaps, so that got chucked before we even had them :D

Those are terrible we had that happen with pigs and chinchillas at the pet store I used to work at, I threw them out quick

That is clever, will be looking round for the ideal tray now.

I'd read on here about the hay balls and hay ricks so was a bit nervous about what to use. I'm not sure I understand about your loo rolls and litter tray, I'm easily confused, lol

Litter trays for me.The piggies have no bother jumping in and out, even Daisy dot my smallest

We have a standard 50cm litter tray (so fairly high sides), they hop over the side no problem. You'd be surprised how agile a hungry guinea pig is.

:D I use a folded C and C grid, fixed vertically to the outer grids, for the piggies permanent hay (Ings). They also have big cardboard boxes, with entrances cut out, for meadow hay. They love rummaging around in the boxes! I put washable puppy pads under the hay racks where they pee and poop the most. Helps to keep most of the fleece clean.

Thanks for this tread and everyone's responses. I was going to ask what kind of things you guys used for litter pans. I haven't any yet so since switching to fleece they have the bottom of a small cardboard box with some care fresh and a little hay on top under their water bottle which is next to their hay rack. They seem to do most poops and pee in there but I want something that will hold most of the pee since it is just soaking through the card board right now

:D I put disposable puppy pads in the bottom of my girls hay boxes. When it's time to change the hay, I just roll it all up and drop it in the bin! (I use Simple Solution pads. Apparently you can get a box of 100 from B&M stores for £3.99.)

Just picked up some puppy pads, decided they were worth having in. Must go to B&M though

Do you put fleece over the reusable puppy pad or just the pad? Do you change this everyday? How often do you change your fleece?

:D The disposable puppy pads in the hay boxes are just used on their own, and the hay is placed on top. They protect the bottom of the cardboard box very well. This is changed every 2-3 days.
The washable puppy pads (again, "Simple Solution") are placed on top of the fleece. Changed and washed once a week.
The floor fleeces and towels are changed once a month.

I use a hay bag as I keep mine on fleece then I also have some in a litter tray as hay piles are just as important as having hay up off of the floor x

Question for those with hay trays, do you put bedding or fleece liver in the bottom to soak up urine or just hay?

i brought my 2 hay bags from Nikki at snoozies cozies:Screen Shot 2016-06-16 at 15.45.02.webp

I just use hay, I could go 3 days with lots of hay and no real puddles. I've done this twice having gone out of town. Normally I change and wash it every day or two and it's wet on the bottom but the hay on top is still good and protects their little feet

Thank you! I currently use paper bedding on the bottom and want to do away with this but was worried about this issue, Do you use a rack as well or just hay trays?
