Hi all

One of my piggies has got a piece of hay sticking out (not lying on his eye) of the corner of his eye. I've read lots on the internet about what to do/ not to do.

My instinct says take him to the vet to get it removed, as if I try it...I don't know how deep it goes and I may do more harm than good. Is this correct? He is fine, eye not infected. Noticed it Saturday - thought I'd give it a bit of time to perhaps fall out naturally?

Thinking vet visit tomorrow.

Look forward to ideas :-) and whether I'm on right lines with going to vet.

Cheers

Justin

If you don't feel like you can remove it personally it will be best to get a vet to do it ASAP, as if it's left in there for a long period it could scratch his eye and lead into ulceration. Ensure to keep him as comfortable as possible before you can go and make sure it isn't irritating him much.

He seems fine. Booked into Vet for 5 45pm today. Hay still there in eye. I'd imagine he is in discomfort, but still running around eating loads and yes, diving into and getting his head deep down buried into plenty of hay.

Good that he is being seen. if there is gunk, there is likely to be some ulceration. Thankfully, most eye injuries tend to heal pretty straight forward.

I have found it easiest to get the eye drops or gel in by distracting the piggy by sitting them on my lap, facing away from me with a good portion of grass or other favourite food to get absorbed in - piggies don't multitask, so they are not as wiggly for you to get near the hurting eye.

Potential eye injuries should always be seen by vet not as an emergency, but next day if possible.

Hi all - Just wanted to let you all know Myles was fine. The Vet extracted the piece of hay, checked his eye and he is a lucky boy. No damage at all :-). They are both currently in their big play pen on the floor. The Vet did mention in passing that Myles was " a bit chubby" :-(. Other than slowley reducing their breakfast intake etc, is there anything else I can do? I mean, they both get the same amounts of food but Fernando is just a bit smaller and leaner. I did cover Myle's ears and say he was beautiful anyway :-), but yes realise losing a bit of weight wouldnt hurt. It's not like they are overfed mind. cheers

The best way to reduce overweight is by not feeding unlimited pellets; you can always reduce the amount you feed. Adult piggies only need about half to a handful per piggy per day. if you give them a small amount in the two bowls that are spaced more than a body length apart, you can make sure that Myles won't hog the most! ;)

Ok cheers for the pellet advice. Funnily enough it's Fernando who always pushes Myles out of the way and nabs his food as well as his own :-). Myles usually manages to tip his bowl everywhere looking for the good stuff at the bottom of the bowl.
