Hi everyone,

I got up at 2am to check on my piggie (she has had recent wee problems which I made another post on) and found a flat piece of hay in her eye :( I tried to get it out with a damp cotton bud but couldn't and now I cant see it, even when pulling the lid down :(

I keep unopened Chloramphenicol Eye Drops 0.5% in the fridge as a precaution and immediately gave her 1 drop into the lower lid, waited 30 mins and followed up with remend gel, she is due metacam at 6am for her other issues.

Will obviously check her over again in the morning, her eye seemed OK when I left her (no redness, cloudiness etc).

I know eye problems require an immediate vet visit but as I have given eye drops and gel, and she has pain relief, providing her eye looks OK (no redness, cloudiness, watering) and I continue with the drops and gel, could a vet visit wait until Friday (she already has one booked) or do we need to go sooner? She has IC so vet trips stress her out and make her flare and she has already been Sunday & Monday with another booked for Friday so was hoping to not have to stress her out again.

Thanks!

Morning. How does it look today?
Morning, thank you for coming back to me, eye looks normal this morning- no redness, cloudiness and its not watering.

She had metacam at 6am, antibiotic drops again at 6:45 and remend again at 7:15, but at this point it had only been about 5hrs since I saw the hay in the eye.

Had a look and still couldn't see the piece of hay.

Glad it’s looking normal. Hopefully the hay will work its way out or it may have already done so.

For what it's worth in future, a small piece of hay on the surface of the eye is usually not a major concern. It will come out either on tis own or with a little help. If I took my pigs to the vets every time they had hay somewhere they shouldn't I would be bankrupt!

If there is damage or irritation, then by all means of course.

You sound like a caring, fastidious owner!

Glad there’s no apparent haypoke.
Your prompt treatment with eye drops probably helped was the hay out.
Good job.
