Hi everyone.
I just had the most terrifying moment. I got my little sow Chloe out for some lap time and a strawberry and her eye was blue, my partner Kevin found hay in it and removed it we than washed it with warm salt water as instructed by our after hours vet. Her eye is no longer as swollen but still blue and misty/milky.
The after hours vet told us she will be fine and to take her in the morning as she may need eye drops and checked if she may be blind from the scratch.

I feel terrible and dont know how I could have avoided the situation, I sweep there cage twice a day I had held her only 4 hours ago with no problems. There hay is timothy the best I could find. I just feel so sorry for her.

Any advice.
Such as if i should ignore what the vet said and take her anyway?
Or anything else.

Thank You for your help inadvance.

Also acting normal, eating some hay and ate her "I'm sorry you got hurt" carrot and is having some water now.
The vet had instructed us not to visit the after hours as she will be fine, but to insure we take her tomorrow. Which we will unless adviced otherwise.
Thank You.

I would take her to the vet anyway how can a vet say she'll be ok when she hasn't seen her. It doesn't matter how careful you are this just happens, at least she needs drops

If she is happy in herself leave it till tomorrow, let us know how things go

My partner and I have decided to wait till tomorrow morning as its $250 to see the afterhours vet and we sadly dont have that money but have enough for standard $80 vet check and any medication she may need. I feel guilty but it will have to do. I will let you know how it goes tomorrow :)

No expert myself. if she eatin and getting on like normal then that must be a good sign. poor mite she needs tlc. No pun ment but keep eye on her. 250 phew that's expensive

My Calipso some weeks ago had a watery eye, don't know what happened, but it had secretion, some pus and scab. I started cleaning the eye (5-6 times a day) using warm water and salt and an infuse with plantain leaves (plantain has a natural strong antibody), appling a gentle compress on her eye and putting some drops inside. I noticed a thing: she was comfortable and let me do everything (usually she does not even like a cuddle!), but when some water was going into the eye and she was feeling "wet" she closed her inner eye making that blue veil I see in the pic of your piggie. Is it possible, then, that what we see in your piggie's eye is only a protective veil?
I did not give any med, I waited and saw only; but I doubled the amount of vit C she already gets daily. Three days after the eye had recovered.

It's always best to have them checked by the vet. They should put some fluorescent dye in her eye to see what damage has been caused. The last time it happened to my boy I removed the hay for him (as it was really sticking out of his eye) but it had caused an ulcer. He had some eye drops, and some pain relief (Metacam) for a week afterwards.

Things like this happen, it's not really anything we can prevent. I have a boar who always seems to have a bit of hay on him somewhere, I really wish I could buy piggy goggles for him.

oh my piggie goggles. top idea. my lad used to bury under hay and his beddin. when we put his hay in we check for hard hay but some sneak thro.

Yep, that's pigs for you. It's impossible to stop it from happening as it can happen with any piece of hay. I don't know how he did it, but this morning my pig, Jon Snow had one of the long fluffy pieces sticking out of his bottom hair. It was like an antenna. When I took it out it pulled out a few of his hairs, I have no idea how he did it!

Ahh bless him. did he look like a mini dodgem car. Hope Chole is better and ok. As i do with all love and unloved pigges.

Hello Everyone.
Thank you so much for your advice and for caring, friends really get it haha.

Chloe is to have eye drops 3 times a day until eye clears, if eye does not clear in 3 weeks there is a chance of having to have the eye removed. But doc is hopeful/confidant that the eye will heal :).

Thanks for the update. Well done for taking her to the vet once they were open. That was definitely the best thing to do.
With eye injuries they usually heal pretty fast with drops but if left for any length of time the eye ulcerates (can even be invisible to the naked eye) and infection can set in. With drops 3 times a day so soon after the injury there's a very good chance of a full recovery. Please keep us posted x
