I noticed within the space of an hour or 2 my piggy had started to close the eye. I examined him and saw a strand of hay on the surface. I was able to remove it easily. The eye has already opened back and he has eaten veg and food without issues and seek to behave his normal, sharing veggies with his bro.

the vet is shut today from 12pm and doesn’t open to 9am tomorrow. Should I book him in to be sure, or keep an eye on it. (Mind the pun)

This has happened to my piggie before, they normally just blink it out. if you can pull the piece of hay out then I don't see why not.

if you feel more comfortable taking him to the vet then please do as it will put your mind at rest. in my opinion I would just keep an eye on it.

Hi and welcome

Since you have been able to remove the strand and it has not pierced the surface, it is not an emergency. It would be good to have the eye surface checked for a potential scratch, but it should be hopefully all fine.

The cases that should been as soon as you can within 24 hours is hay or grass stuck under an eyelid (where the risk of scratches and resulting ulcerating infection is much higher) and of course hay pokes.
If there is visible blood, then that makes any eye problem an out-of-hours emergency that should be seen at time of the day and as quickly as you can be seen by a vet.

I hope that this helps you?

We just went through this. I found what looked like a seed coat (hairy rough piece from the tip of a weed that was in with the hay) sticking out from between her lower eyelid and eye.

I got her to the vet just under 48 hours later as that was the soonest. In that time waiting I really didnt think it was an emergency.

They did a stain to see if there was damage to the eye (thankfully no!) and gave some antibiotic ointment for irritation inside the eyelid.

Now that was a lucky experience. Another pig had a piece of hay under her eyelid for an unknown amount of time and it caused a severe emergency ulcer...but even that healed perfectly after over 2 weeks of drops.

Long story short...you cant go wrong with taking them in. But it sounds like it might be ok if you just watch it 👀
