I am quite confused at the moment...

Obviously hay (timothy?) needs to be given unlimited to the piggies in their cages and perhaps can be given as a bedding too. However, are the bedding hay and the food hay the same hay? Or can you buy hay that is specifically for eating and hay that is just used as a bedding?

I was just wondering this because if I am going to use hay as a bedding, I thought it might be cheaper to buy a separate hay for bedding and good quality hay for eating.

Thank you in advance for any help :)

Hi

It would be ok to use the same hay for both, it will get eaten anyway whayever hay it is :))

Just remember to remove any damp hay from the bedding area regularly.

Thank you so much!

I am thinking of cleaning the cage everyday to 2 days. I just think hay and newspaper will be quicker to clean than fleece etc

Hi there is not a particular type of hay to use as bedding, just use what they seem to like best. You'll find that pigs like to munch away while lying down in the hay so you'd be best off just buying that type in bulk and then buying small bags of other types of hay to give them for a treat so they can have a varity. I think it's personal choice to what hay people use, as some pigs like soft hay to lie on but like more stalky hay to eat. I'd just try a few different ones and see what they like best. :)

I've ordered some Ing hay along with some meadow hay from hay for pets, my piggies had a sample of it last week and loved it. :)

I have heard they are good so hopefully I will order some soon :<>

Glad your piggies loved them! The Ing hay sounds yummy drool I think I will get a sample and try them out and see which one works and maybe even try them one after the other, one week of Ing, another week of meadow rolleyes

My two ate the bedding hay and slept on the more expensive hay! They love hay cookies! x

:)) Your piggies have made me laugh! That's so cute lol Silly things! Perhaps the cheaper hay tastes better? Or maybe they just like to nap and chew at the same time... lazy xx>>>

Mine just get hay by the bale, the same as our horse gets. Some of them quite like the Excel herbage as a treat but not all of them are that keen!

Mine seem to eat the hay they pee on regardless, slightly gross but then I also find poos in the food bowl sometimes...Nice manners my pigs have...!

When mine do this I always say they are my husbands pigs and not mine at all! Personal hygiene in pigs is terrible.

Haha! The girls are far worse than the boys though, when my boars lived alone (post neuter, waiting for the tadpoles to die) their hutches would have all the poops in one corner, usually the furthest from the food.

Whereas when I had my two girlies Whiskey and Noodles living together, there would be poo EVERYWHERE!
