Hay issues?

Hi all
Just wondering if any of you are having problems with hay?
I just opened my dust extracted P@H hay and it vile, had me sneezing, very soft, but very dusty, it's not the first bag I've had like this.
I will get it replaced.
Also the other hays I bought for their hay racks all seem to have gone to short crop, this just falls out of the hay rack
and I'm buying nearly double, once it's fallen through, it gets wee'd on.
I'm in the north west, are there any better suppliers?
I haven't any real storage and so can't go to a farm for a bale.

On my return from down south on Sunday I went to a bad Petshop in Liverpool, I knew it would be open and wasn't sure on my regular shop being open on a Sunday and didn't want to waste time so I bought a big bag for £2.99. I wasn't sure on it though, it looked a little dusty and the smell from their own pigs and rabbits was very sweet and I just knew it was the hay but I bought it regardless.

Gave it to the pigguns after I'd cleaned them out and they had a nibble but they hated it! But I kept giving it until I could get some of their regular barn dried Timothy Hay but it never got eaten at all! I even noticed that it had dried mud in it and then I thought they are not having it so took it all out and had to give them grass for the night!

I freaked when I saw the stones I thought it was bladder stones...lol Such a worrier I am!

I'm having different problems my last bag of meadow hay was full of twigs infact I would go as far as callng them sticks!

I try and get a better hay for eating, greener, excel was fab. They changed it to the short crop and it's getting wasted. At £3 a small bag, I can't justify it.
I am going to look into ordering from the dust free one, people have mentioned on here, in the new year.
It's the lack of storage that causes problems too.

I cut my finger on what looked like a thistle in the last bag, I had heard there would be problems with hay.
 
My barn dried costs me £1.85 and lasts a week. The pigs love it, they went off excel as I was giving that and herbage. Fussy monkeys. :) Hay has been so poor this year! I've got a bale in the garden just rotting away until a plastic sheet, will dispose of it after Chrimbo!
 
P@H Timothy was good, thats gone short crop too. They liked the herbage too, all falls through.
Maybe a different hay rack, bought a different one, still fell through.
I shall look around and see if there is one with the metal bars closer together. ;)
 
The hay I get from dustfreehay has been consistently good all year, no complaints at all :)

Apparently there's a problem with the hay this year because of all the bad weather - flooding in the Summer etc. I was also told that the price would be going up too, but not noticed that yet. My local pet shop got a wrong delivery last week and I have had to buy short crop - OMG it's so messy! Can't wait til the w/e when I can get the proper long stuff again. The short stuff was really dusty too and made the piggies sneeze and snuffle. I have had to put it in a bowl!

I recommend getting either 10 bales for £40 or the extra large bale. I got the 10 bales last time and with 8 piggies, I still have 3 1/2 bags left and I got it in October! So it is worth the money I think O0
 
I have no storage space, so I will have to get less than that.
Sounds great value though. O0
 
Believe me I have no storage either! Mine is rammed in the electric cupboard ;D

I've bought several kinds recently and they're all really short. Like you I'm having problems keeping it in the hay rack.
 
I get Dust Free Hay and local farm hay. No problems with either of them.
 
What quantities does this dust free hay come in? Is a bale really big? I have no storage space either (I live in one room), so I couldnt get too much. I bet it works out cheaper to buy in bulk though!
 
(Just read the post)

I get worried if the piggies are not warm enough because in long hay they can curl up and make like a nest thingy. In short hay it just gets trampled down.

This is what I normally have, but the last couple, although really soft, have been very very dusty. :(

If you go to the site they show you how much hay is contained in a pillow pack (bale). Its about a dustbin full. I will have to remember to count the number of mouths it feeds :)
 
I've ordered from dust free and the hay is lovely but the normal sized bales only last me a few days so I'm probably going to order the bigger size next time O0
 
I think it depends on what you use it for and whether you feed any other hays too. I always feed Meadow Hay from the local farm too and sometimes Alpine, occasionaly we push the boat out and get Oxbow hay ::) I don't use it for bedding either :)
 
I think I was using a bit for bedding as well which is why it didn't last as long! I think I will try oxbow next year as well when I've got a bit of money as I'm now officially skint! :)

It's bedding and eating hay causing problems. Beddings too dusty and the other is just falling through the hay rack. :(
 
the one i get from asda is what i use to put in their hay rack (which has huge holes, its the bottom draw from our freezer at work, which i stole) and mine arent lucky enough to get hay for bedding all the time, they get shredded paper instead which i find easier to clean as they are on fleece

I get some lovely hay from my local petshop but it only comes in little bags so I usually get three at a time!
It's smells really sweet and the piggies love it :smitten:
