Hay issues?

My 10 small bales which I bought early Oct will last me till well after Christmas. I use newspaper and aubiose and put a big pile of the hay in the corner and timothy hay in their rack although they also love munching the dustfree. I think it works out cheaper in the long run than buying petshop hay O0

My piggies love that excel forage stuff, but it only comes in small bags and last a day! I bought P@H hay for bedding for the first time, but never used it because when I put my hand in the bag a thorn stuck into my hand!

i got a pack from seals fodder room and it gave bob mites. so i bought some pets at home hay and it was thin, stringy and damp :-\

I'm actually using timothy for both eating and bed at the min as its the only decent hay i can get at home

For people who have problems with storage space, most farms will sell you half a bale of hay.

I buy half a bale every fortnight because I was struggling storing the whole bale

i usually get lovely hay from the market in derby but theyve been a little short on stock lately, and couldnt get any before i came back to my parents :(

i really need a good hay and think il be trying some of these. the quality of the hay iv been getting lately has been poor or been short and fell out of the hay rack in all the different ones iv tried. iv got one piggy though who will only eat this horrid poor quality hay. its what i gave him before i knew better and now he wont eat any other hay.

I will have to look into the half bale , thanks Gaffer :) :)

:tickedoff: i too get the p@h hay,the short strand (apparently dust extracted) hay,its awful for bedding as it just tramples down, and the last big pack i brought was full of nasty extremely sharp thistles and sticks, and the dust in it was unbelievable! but i cant seem to find any decent long strand hay around me, we have tried a few farms and its all been thistle ridden and i just didnt want to use it. i have a 6ft x 4ft shed which i would love to fill half of with hay for them to snuggle into but its just not possible with the prices round here in petshops, and with 14 piggies in there i dont want to risk getting hay that will give them mites so i have to stick to the expensive stuff for now.

oh and has anyone got any ideas on where i can get cheap huge bales of woodshavings from around lincolnshire? i live at hemswell cliff, and we are willing to travel to buy some if its a good price, at the minute we use p@h giant bales costing 9.99 and it lasts 1 week/ 2 clean outs, as i have it in a 4-6 inch layer through the whole shed, its costing a small fortune but i wont cut down on clean outs as they need them that frequently :smitten: dont want them getting poorly due to poor living conditions :smitten: though my hubby thinks i go overboard with how much i do for them 98) i figure you can never do too much for a beloved herd of piggies :smitten: any ideas greatly appreciated, thanks, kelly :)

my last pack of the P@H hay your talking about was damp, brown, and stringy >:(

Mine like a bit of variety so they have P@H Timothy Hay, Excel Herbage and i buy Meadow Hay from a small local petshop.
Occassionally i will buy them a small bag of The Alfalfa King Timothy Hay which they like because it is really green and coarse, but at £3.99 a bag it doesn't go very far between 6 Piggies.
I'm very interested in trying The dust free hay though. :)

Try your Yellow Pages under Farm Shops. I in Reading Central and get mine delivered from a farm. Have to say I don't like shavings though. If you want a woody based product thats absorbent Aubiose is the healthier option for guineas :)

I use aubiose and find it great, very very absorbant and it goes a long way. A huge 20kg bag is about £7. Look up equestrian suppliers (it is actually horse bedding) in your area to find your nearest stockist :)

Lez, if your dustfree hay wasn`t up to scratch, I would email Norman and tell him. I am sure he will sort something out :)

Even if there is no one near you online farm shops can order it in for you because its an equine bedding. Just beware of anything scented or with essential oils :)

its ok, once I'm back in derby i will be going to the market again to get my lovely cheap but good quality bags of hay :smitten:

at the min I'm just using timothy hay as its the only hay i have, and I'm not back in derby til thursday

O0 thanks for the opinions on the woodshavings, but ive always found it to be best for my piggies, ive tried other things and always return to shavings, the piggies seem happier in them than anything else except maybe the russell rabbits bedding, but its far too expensive and i dont find it as absorbant. i will search my yellow pages for any decent farm shops round here, thanks for the idea ;) and i agree, dont bother with the p@h hay at the moment, its awful :o

I wasn't happy with my Timothy Hay, not only was it long strands I couldn't get it out the bag without causing a hay explosion. I also wanted to find a local pellet supplier. Pets at Home St Helens and Aintree are too far for me without causing petrol issues so I found a great little shop in Aigburth Liverpool that sell fish but no pigs etc. I went in and said do you sell Guinea Pig Pellets, the guy looked at me as if I was mental and said they can have chinchilla pellets...er.... :-X I had a nose around and found Spillers Pellets so they are now on Exel I mixed a bit in and done it gradually. :)

But he also sold hay and looking at it, it didn't look great but when I opened the bag it was fantastic! I am so impressed. Shorter strands (not really short just right for them) and easily managed out of the bag.

And thankfully I don't have to go back to Mrs Ogre in the shop I got Sunshine from, she's such a Dragon breath! ;D
