I asked a couple of weeks ago about treating hay mites as I noticed both my boys have them. I got the xeno and have done the first treatment and 2nd one is due next Tuesday 31st. Just wondering if there is anything else I can do as one of my boys in particular seems to have loads on the fur above his back legs (i can literally pick them out in clumps🫣) and the first treatment doesn’t seem to have done much. Actually looks like there is more of them now that there was previously! If possible I don’t want to be going out buying more treatment as it’s already cost loads but wondered if bathing, brushing etc would help. Thanks

You really do need to complete all three treatments for the course to be complete.
The treatment will only kill live mites, not the eggs. The second treatment kills those mites which have hatched since the first treatment and the third treatment is a catch all for any stragglers.

You should cut the hair off, so as to remove as many eggs as possible.
Also make sure you have thrown hay away.

Yeah I am going to complete the treatment, sorry I meant can I do anything else. I’ve already got the rest of the treatment.

I’ll cut their fur, how much needs to be cut, just the ends where they are or all of the back end?

You will want to cut as many as the eggs out as you can so go as far into the hair shaft as you need to

Hi

I am very sorry.

Cut as low to the skin as you can safely do wherever you can feel eggs. It is very unsightly but short hair will grow back within a month, so it is only temporary. The removed eggs are all mites that you do not have to fight chemically while they are busy making new eggs. It reduces the mites load you are dealing with instantly...

Never underestimate mechanical removal as an effective measure when dealing with parasites; simple things can work, too! ;)

Thank you, I’ll look at cutting it back, luckily they seems to all be in the same area so I think I can get rid of most of them just by giving him a trim. Not aure he’ll be impressed tho!

I doubt that he'll be impressed! :D

But all the best for getting on top of it quickly.
