I have a really stupid question. It's about hay.

I ran out of the usual hay for the herd this morning. Went to the farm to get another bale...and they did not have any. They are waiting for another delivery which they will get in two weeks time.

So I went to another farm. I asked for hay and I was given this. Is it simply stalky hay (like the oat hay I have from Timothyhay.co.uk) or is it straw? I thought straw was thicker...image.webpimage.webp

It's the best I could find...apart from getting bags from P&H and with 8 piggies I need a lot of hay!

I don't like the fact that it's brown, but I'm hoping that the new stuff is in stock soon.

Thanks Claire.

I agree that it looks like hay and safe to give to the piggies. As hay is a natural product it varies tremendously from field to field and from the time of year it’s been harvested. So sometimes it’s more stalky than other times. But it’s still good fibre for the piggies.

I am always getting smaller bags of 'fancy' hay for the piggies, and sometimes the hay I think looks sticky and unappetising is their favorite!
We currently have a large bag of beautiful smelling soft hay from a local farm and the piggies barley eat any - they just make little circular nests in it.
I think if they are eating it then it is good piggy hay.
What we think doesn't really matter!

I am always confused as to what makes the perfect stand of hay. Our pigs will go through a pile picking put the best bits... I sometimes try to hand feed them strands only for some strands to be ignored. Chickpea will eat most strands I offer but Widget has to wait for the perfect one.....

Mine are very picky with hay especially Spike, he scratches around like a chicken until he finds a good bit!
