I know the general advice is always to take them to the vets when in doubt but it really stresses this certain pig out and id rather avoid it if I can..

Id just refilled the hay and went away for an hour or so and come back to see that one of the girls had a little bit of hay in the corner of her eye. She let me take it out with no bother but her eye is slightly cloudy and the white is blood shot. I held her and drizzled warm water over it and I checked a bit later and it looks less irritated.

Do you think she will need to go to the vets? It doesnt look scratched or infected or punchered.

I will see how it is tomorrow and possibly take her to the vets..

I feel helpless really, I have their hay in a hay rack above the level of the floor to prevent hay poke and now its happened for the first time in two years of having these pigs :(. I'm not sure what else I can do to prevent it happening again. .

You need to get to a vet as they will need to put a dye in to check for a scratch and possibly need antibiotic eye drops. Be careful putting water in eyes unless it is sterile it can cause infections.

I just checked on her before work and her eye is cloudy and blue but better than last night so ill book her a vets appointment for when I finish work this afternoon :)

Eye problems can be deceiving. My boy is currently on his second lot of antibiotics for what we thought was very minor eye damage. It's best to get it checked out. Good luck!

Ive got a vet appointment for 3pm so not long now. She is running around happy and eating and playing so I'm hoping its just a little bit irritated. Will keep you up to date :)

Luckily it was just a superficial scratch on the surface and she was given eye drop antibiotics and metacam for pain relief. We have one grumpy girl with a spooky eye from the dye!

I'm going to look into insurance for them, at £47 and 4 pigs, things could get expensive :/
