Hay poke - need vet attention or not

Well done for getting the vets appointment last night. With eyes it’s always best to act sooner rather than later as they can turn nasty very quickly. So you’ve done exactly the right thing getting her seen so quickly. With any luck the eye will heal within a few days. When are you going back for a re-check?

Hay pokes are such an annoyance! I understand they are prey animals and need to be vigilant but honestly, you have eyelids piggies, just use them!

She's back for a checkup tomorrow, doesnt look any worse this morning thankfully, couldn't really tell if it was getting better though.

Improvement is not quite immediate. The first thing the drops are doing is to stop the further spread before they start healing. By tomorrow your vet will know whether the isathal is working or not. But the infection not getting any worse on day 1 of treatment is a VERY good sign that you are on track! :tu:

Wondering if anyone can offer some advice on cleaning the eye, the vet mentioned cleaning the eye with salt water before using the drops? Can I use a makeup cotton pad for this?

I wasn't told to do that when Dennis had haypoke last week nor have I been advised to do that on the many haypokes my piggies have had over the last 4 years of ownership. I should think that salt water on the eye would be very painful.

Same for me - I was never told go clean before applying drops either.
I would think cotton pads might even run the risk of strands of cotton coming off and entering the eye

I’ve never had to clean a piggy’s eye and I’ve dealt with haypoke too.
With mine it’s usually taken about a week to clear up.
Hope your beauty’s eye heals quickly

How is the eye now?

Begw's eye is thankfully healing really well and nearly back to normal again.
Here are pictures from Thursday - 3 days after my first picture, just to show what a difference prompt treatment makes.
Lubricants in addition to the antibiotic drops really help to speed up the process.
