Barley is off to the vets in a bit to get his eye checked and to get some drops. We noticed this morning that his eye looked sore. On closer examination Ross managed to get a hay seed out of his eye. Our vets are happy for us to give pain relief when needed so he has had Metacam to keep him comfortable until his appointment. I thought the following photos may help anyone in the same situation. You can see his eye has started to ulcerate.

Poor lad, Thanks for the info Helen.

Let us know how Barley gets on. Vibes being sent x x x

Thank you for posting the photo. Photos are very helpful to us all - and paticularly our newer members.

I hope Barley is OK

Hay pokes are so nasty but so easily sustained. It's a really good idea to share photos to help other members.

Healing vibes to Barley

Brilliant idea, really informative for us newbies. Although we kept Guinea pigs somewhere in the last century:fog:, I really do consider myself new to all this, things have changed regarding their care so much. I had never even heard of hay poke before joining here, let alone seen it. Maybe I was just lucky with my last two, but at least now I'm aware and know what to look for, thanks, and I hope your piggy is feeling better soon, it must be blooming painful for the poor little things.

Glad it is helpful. We have just got back, the vet was glad we had started Metacam so have to continue that. She put the green dye in and there is damage as expected. He has Fucithalmic eye ointment and has to go back on Monday to check it is healing ok. He was her third guinea pig hay poke today.

I am worried about hay pokes as mallow n crunchie rummage in it and walk with it on their backs etc.. But normally the hay is softer. I normally get 2014 hay from timothyhay.co.uk but they where all out so i bought a 15kg bag of 2013 hay this time. Its super long strands with sharp ends! My nerves are shattered!

Fingers crossed it will be ok. I have had stalky hay before and no issues, tend to get more issues with hay seeds. Our Terk was the worst, she lived with Barley's friend Ellie and am sure the message has been passed on about how best to make us panic .
