Ruby has a really nasty hay poke. My parents had been looking after them the past couple days so i dont know when it happened but I checked them last night and although it was dark and I may have missed it i didnt see anything abnormal. Today however her eye was crusty and leaking and clouded. There was one of those horrible spore things in there. I have managed to safely remove the spore(if thats what they are) and clean the eye with salty water. My biggest problem is getting to a vet to get some eye drops. With it being new year i do not know that i will be able to get an appointment very soon. I know i need to go though but my parents not so. You see Holly my past piggy got a hay poke and i just treated it with salty water safe to say that eye stayed cloudy but didnt give her any other discomfort. I do not want that to happen to ruby so i realise my mistake and know that i have to get eye drops. Do you think she would be ok until sunday or maybe just maybe i could get her an appt on saturday morning. I'm really worried that if i cant get her treated in tie something bad will happen.DSCN0409.webp DSCN0406.webp

Sorry to hear this . I would ring the vet today if I were you - particularly as you are more likely to get a vet appointment today than tomorrow. I would not leave this until Saturday - the sooner she starts eye drops the better.

Any eye injury needs to be seen by a vet as promptly as possible. It is not an area to wait and see, as eye injuries can get worse very very quickly and may lead ultimately to the loss of the eye. The inside of the eye is a protected space where antibiotics can't work; it is important to prevent any infection cause by a poke to develop in there.

Many vets are open until this evening; best have the eye seen today at a normal fee rather than needing an emergency service tomorrow. Salt water is not enough to cure a full hay poke.

I cant get a hold of my parents- theyve gone ice skating. I really get very anxious when phoning people so,m I'm finding it hard to phone the vets myself. They will shut soon and I cant get there myself so I really dont know what to do.

Chocolate now! i managed to get myself into quite a state...

You deserve some chocolate . You've done ever so well getting the hay out of her eye and you've persevered in getting her a vet's appointment.

Enjoy your chocolate.

You've done well getting that hay out the eye. My Lola had one of those and I couldn't get it out.

I hope the pretty patient has a speedy recovery x

You've done the right thing, i took primrose to the vet yesterday because her eye looked sore. The vet found a long thin strand of hay in there. She now has fucidin eye drops and metacam painkiller. She is back to her normal self today, apart from a cloudy eye, the vet said she has a large ulcer on the surface of her eye. She goes back for a check up next week.

Well my mum phoned the emergency vet and they said to wait and see... Not what I was hoping for.

it would be ok to use freshly boiled&cooled (egg cup sized amount of) water with a pinch of salt dissolved in it for now to bathe the eye/drip in with a clean kitchen towel or clean syringe, just to help flush any loose debris out of it & keep it clean, but she should really see a vet & get eyedrops, any general vet can provide her with eyedrops (usually fucithalmic (sp?) or tiacil) it doesn't have to be an expensive exotics specialist for this, but it will normally start to heal up nicely as soon as the drops are put in. she will need pain relief too , it's a bit like having grit or an eyelash in your eye for us but just more painful :(

i'm surprised at the vet having a wait & see approach as eyes are very delicate & injuries/complications can spiral out of control very quickly if not treated.
i would see a different vet for a second opinion ASAP.

well done for getting the grass seed out whole, that would have caused some serious damage if left in for long & rubbing against the eyeball.
let us know how she gets on.

healing vibes for Ruby. xx

Sorry to hijack your post but my boy has exactly the same symptoms (fine yesterday- cloudy weeping eye tonight). I have fine gauze & saline solution -randomly for my daughters eyes. I have managed to clear his eye of the offending grass seed but is there anything I can do until the morning? It does not appear ulcerated. I have chloramphenicol eye drops here. Should I use some or wait to be seen by the vet tomorrow? Thanks in advance x

Well done for getting the bit out. I would not start any eye drops until a vet has seen her.
