My guinea pig has a red eye probably from hay poke - his pupil is kind of bluish with a red tinge around it. Does anyone know what to do? He does like to hang out under the hay box

Poor boy :( that looks like a hay poke injury to me. Please take him
To the vets first thing tomorrow. They can check for further damage, any debris in the eye and he will need a course of eye drops

I can only make an appointment in the afternoon is that too late or will it be ok?

Hi! Please see a vet promptly. Eye injuries can be worse than you see by naked eye and can deteriorate very quickly. Your vet can assess the damage with a special dye and adjust the treatment accordingly. the sooner you can treat, the sooner the eye will heal.

Please ask the vet for a lubricant (artificial tears) in addition to any antibiotic eye drops or gel. Apply it up to 6 times a day, but always wait for half an hour after any antibiotic drops. this helps to keep the eye hydrated and more comfortable; it can also help to clear it more quickly.
A painkiller/anti-inflammatory can also help with the discomfort in the first days.

We've been to the vets and he has a small ulcer but nothing too major. We now have some cream for his eye which should hopefully help! Thank you all for your advice

That is great news! Hopefully the eye is fully healed in 7-10 days.

Distract your boy with some of his favourite food facing away from you on your lap and sneak in the gel from his dead angle on the behind. Wait until he is fully absorbed in munching; guinea pigs don't multitask and are less aware of their body and surroundings. The first few days are hardest when the eye is sore, so it may take you a few attempts at first.
