does anyone know of an over the counter eye gel /ointment for guinea pigs eyes,

If your piggy has hay poke then they need to see a vet as a matter of emergency. They will need an antibiotic eye drop and most like pain relief too. Without this eyes can deteriorate very quickly and you could be faced with a very expensive bill for an operation to remove the eye

Hi!

Eye injuries can be much worse than visible to the naked eye and should always be seen as promptly by a vet as possible because they can deteriorate very quickly. Your vet can assess the extent of the damage with a special dye and UV light.
They will prescribe antibiotic eye drops according to the extent of the damage; they are not available over the counter.

Well great news, took her to the emergency vet on Sunday, drops and pain meds, Tuesday she has amazing improvement, had check up today and again on Friday but the vet very happy with her progress

Well done! thank you for the update!

Eye injuries when caught early and treated promptly heal quickly and usually without problems. it is the catching them before they can go really bad that does the trick. it is the same for all illnesses, but because of the speed of deterioration even more crucial with eyes! ;)

Absolutely, she could have lost her eye, our vet is not a exotic vet but she was excellent

Eye treatment and medication is the same for all pet species and does not require an exotics vet. Several of my own piggies' eyes have been saved by emergency service vets. ;)

A careful and considerate general vet who is willing to do research if necessary can be worth more than an exotics vet not interested in something as common as a guinea pig or other small pet rodents.

That's excellent news. I had similar early this year with Lily and her eye was bulging and looked awful, the vet was certain we would end up having to remove it but with the eyedrops we quickly got it under control and she still has both her eyes :)

Same here thought her eye was going to be removed. Many thanks for all the help from the admins, it's a fantastic forum.

My piggy somehow got a piece of hay stuck in his eye, which was like almost under the eye... took him to the vet and she removed the largest piece of hay she had ever taken out of a guinea pig's eye, we put him on antibiotics drops in his eye and after about a week, back to normal! Mind you I think the antibiotic caused him to have weird looking poops.
