So, 6 years in and I’ve got my first hay poke to deal with!

We can’t get this out/off of Kingsley’s eye. Any tips or tricks, or is it a vet visit?

Vet visit I would say. Hopefully the beauty will be seen soon

Hi

Please see a vet as soon as possible. Any eye injuries can deteriorate very quickly. The sooner you can start treating, the quicker and easier the recovery.

Eye treatment and medication is the same as for other common spet species so any decent general vet can treat - this is the one case where it is more important to see the vet you can see soonest rather than waiting for days to see an exotics vet. In the UK, vets will prioritise potential eye infections for that reason and make sure that they are seen as soon as they possibly can.

Thanks @Wiebke

Our regular vet is happy to see the piggies and generally will fit them in within an hour of calling, so we should be able to get to them first thing.

Bloomin’ Kingsley! Been here 5 minutes and already causing drama!

All the best!

Life with guinea pigs is never boring...

Quick question: off to the vet in a few minutes. Should I take Keith, too? As it’s not been long since Kingsley has been with us will they be ok apart - could be an hour or more as we’ll be squeezed in as and when..

Thank you!

I always take a friend too :)
Poor little gorgeous Kingsley, and you! Really hope he’s ok and feeling much better soon bless him, good luck with your vet trip x

If at all possible, please always take a 'paw-holding' companion with you to the vet clinic. It is a lot less stressful for both that way.

All the best with the eye! It should hopefully be a fairly straight forward recovery with the right medication.

Back home, all settled back into a fresh hay pile! the piece of hay was almost an inch long! Thankfully just stuck to the surface of the eye, with no cuts or abrasions. Got to keep an eye on it for a few days to make sure it doesn't get upset. No drops.

Kingsley was wonderful, took it all in his stride!
