Sorry this is happening at this time of night. I know what a worry it is. I’d remove all the bits of hay that you can see and if you know what dose of metacam to use, then I’d do that. It’ll help to ease any discomfort he’s in until you can get hold of an emergency vet. Hope you are able to get him seen soon.

He was seen yesterday. They gave him metacam and anti-inflammatory in form of injections. Prescribed him clorogen and remend ocular gel. Right after the vet the eye looked sore, but he was keeping it open, after i put the antibiotic drops, he started closing and he still keeps it closed. Following the advice of the emergency vet, I contacted my usual one, and they said to give it time and ring back tomorrow. His weight is stable, but he keeps the eye closed and looks like he is in pain.

Hi

I am very sorry if the eye stays shut. You will have to keep prying it open for the medication. Please gently pull the lower lid down and aim any drops into the gap.

It may be that some debris has gone under a lid. If the eye stays closed after medicating that is not unusual but it doesn't open at all day, even a slit, then please a vet tomorrow.

He started opening his eye more, looks like he has something white forming like a dot, on top of the cloudy looking eye. I am scared he might get blind in that eye. Not sure if i should press tomorrow the vet for metacam or/and a check up.

Did the vet not advise to continue with Metacam for a while then? I have always been advised by my piggy vet to give it for a few days after a hay poke.

No, i asked for extra, but they said the injections will keep him comfortable

If you’re still concerned for him, you could always give them a call and see what they say. Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

Thank you I will call them tomorrow again.

Good news, he was checked today and the vet is happy with how it's healing. I guess I was worried, because I have never dealt with this, before and don't know what's normal part of the healing process and what not. The emergency vet warned me things can go downhill quickly, and seeing him puffed up in his hidey with his eye closed was alarming. He got metacam too.

At the end of the check up he did the cutest thing ever, he was sitting calmly on the table the whole time and when i put his carrier together and the vet said we're done he just calmly walked inside.

Bless him, he was glad to get away from that vet and have a lie down.
Hay pokes can look very scary. I am glad you managed to get him seen and that he got Metacam. Mine have always had Metacam for a week when they have had hay pokes.

He is a good boy and a gentle soul. Taking his meds like a champ, without putting up a fight. Makes me wonder if he understands its for his own good.

I have a question I want to clean the crusts on his eylids, but don't know if normal tap water is ok or fragrance free baby wipes. Forgot to ask the vet 😅

Poor little guy, hay pokes really are scary — it’s amazing how quickly things can change with eye injuries. It’s great that he was seen so quickly and that the vet is happy with the healing. That moment when they just calmly walk back into the carrier always melts my heart — like they know they’re going home 🥹

Glad the Haypoke is healing now.
It’s a bit scary the first time but you’re doing a great job.
Hope everything fully heals quickly now
