Hay Question

which hay?

When you shop for dust free hay, do you go for the softer or stalkier hay?
 
Yeah, i wanted to know which is better nutritionally. I got the timothy which they like. I was gonna order some of the normal stalky but my paypal is screwed so i had to get the p@h!!grrrr I think the soft is best bedding and stalky has higher feed value.
 
i wondered if they'd get poke wounds from the stalkier variety? as the stalky hay is meant to be better. x

I always get the Oxbow Western Timothy hay (through my vets) as I was told this was best, and they've never - yet - had any wounds. They eat it and use it as bedding. It's very stalky, definitely not soft.
 
Stalkier for me its better for their teeth and keeps them shorter. :) I have a couple of pigs who do get long teeth and the soft pigs just don't wear them down.
 
I buy a bale of hay from a local farmer which I always insist is soft, green, dust free and smelling sweet.

But I supplement this with Timothy Hay, which is thicker and more stalky, in their food bowls and to keep them occupied!
 
Mine all prefer stalkier hay.
They love the new scratch and newton hay at the moment.
 
so,if i was to go to the dust free company, should i go for soft or stalky? (use the poll guys!)
 
I would go for Stalkier I wouldn't just give them soft hay on its own as they need something to wear those teeth down. :)
 
i get the soft from dust free hay, but ive never tried the stalky. maybe next time i would order a choice - you can do this, have a combination, maybe try doing this.
 
you can have a mixture of hay and straw, not two different types of hay or straw. grr! x
 
Oh thats a pain! I think the soft straw is still good for them in terms of giving them hay to fill them up as it is good for them but they need something for those peggys! Perhaps Willow balls for a good dental workout if you give them the softer stuff!

Mine dont both with them though! rolleyes
 
mine will chew on anything, maybe if i choose a mixture of soft hay and straw then? i just always thought straw was a definate NO when it comes to piggies x
 
straw is a no no, whjen you order on there, it gives you option for how many stalky or soft bales to have, dont get straw.
 
I would go for a mixture of the two, personally. I love the Oxbow timmy hay but it's extortionate. Soft straw is only a bedding, not something they eat.

I was looking at the dustfreehay website yesterday - just wondered how big the bags of hay were and how long they usually last.?/

they are tightly compacted, and i have two piggies and the bag or box, depending on what it comes in lasted me for about a month.

the box/bag is about 60cm H x 35cm W x 20cm D (thats at a guess!)
 
I bought some from dust free hay before.. but tbh i didnt think i got enough for the money, i much prefer the mountain hay from PP, you get loads for the money and its nice and green and really nice smelling the pigs love it!

atm I'm using P@H hay for their bedding and for them to eat as PP is shut until november.

Louise what are these soft pigs you're not feeding? :)):))

I get bales of soft hay from a local farm shop as coarse hay means thistles etc but apparantly because of the bad weather there are probs getting it
