I have three male guinea pigs who all share a cage. i used to scatter feed them hay, but i recently got a hay rack as a present from someone. i tried it out , but they keep on knocking it down. it is also way too small for three growing piggies, and the bars are too close together for them to be able to grab much. does anyone recommend any other hay racks?

here's a pic:

i would like something that doesn't have to be refilled every half hour, ( my guinea pigs eat very quickly) but doesn't limit their space or cost a fortune.

My girls have a solid plastic hayrack that goes outside the cage and fits enough hay in for about half a day (or an hour if they pull it out onto the floor, but still lots of hay). These come free with most Ferplast type cages but you can probably buy one (or ask anyone who has Ferplast type cages to send you a spare, we have accumulated 5 of these in 5 months and not all piggies use a hayrack!). The bars are just your cage bars and the plastic rack clips outside and slots inside the cage base.

I made my own hay bags for the piggies and they worked really well. My rabbits just chewed straight through them so for them I use the same type ones @PigglePuggle uses.

I have a metal corner basket tied very tight to the bars of the cage. It's the sort of thing that's meant to go in a bathroom to hold all your shampoo and such, but I took the suction cups off. I like it because it just fits really nicely in the corner and I feel it takes up less space whilst also holding enough hay. The gaps are a decent size, the pigs can grab the hay really well but without being able to stick their whole heads in and get stuck like they can with some traditional hayracks. A few people have found their guinea pigs hanged by the traditional ones :( I got it from the bathroom section of sainsburys, you can probably find one in any home store

I just have an empty cardboard box; I just fill it with hay and they love it, works fine. It can become a toy as well!

I would suggest this hay rack as I have 2 fully grown guinea pigs and had the same problem as you I recently brought this and it been excellent ever since and there plant of room with my two pigs so you should be OK with 3.
Hope this helps.

That hay rack isn't very safe I'm afraid as piggies can get their heads stuck in it. I'm sure a while back a piggy died cos it's head was stuck and it strangled itself.

There was a thread a while ago that a guinea pig got hanged by one of these. Betsy is correct, they're very unsafe

thank you so much for the advice.
i have been using a box with holes big enough to grab the hay. I cut a slit in between each so they can easily pull their heads out. my younger guinea pigs like to get inside when the hay finishes!

I use a hanging shower caddy. They love it so much that Groucho often sleeps in it. Please excuse the mess - it's cleaning night tonight.:D

I have 2 of these and I used it in the past. My piggy Bunny used to jump on top of it to eat the hay when she was a baby. But then when all my piggies became adult, it took up too much space and they would rather eat hay on the floor. So just put meadow hay on top of puppy pads in one corner and then have 2 other types of hay (orchard and timothy) in hanging hay racks.

I would suggest the Trixie hay rack. The one that is 20cmx18cmx12cm. You get get this off of amazon for $15. Sorry i am late to this thread by the way. Just thought i would give out suggestions 😁

Here is a hay tray for my boy Finn, which he also uses as his bathroom. I have two more, one in his wooden cage, and one for my Lara.
I do end up throwing away some hay but I don't expect them to finish eating everything they peed and pooped on.
