Hey guys, I've just noticed that my piggie don't eat so much hay when I put it in the hay rack, but when I have his hay down in his cage he is eating much more.. But the problem is that when I have his hay down he will make everything a mess :( Any suggestions

I would personally remove they hay rack, our girls love sitting in the hay, i know it get a little messy but hay is vital for gut and teeth health. The more they eat the healthier they are going to be. Welcome to the forum by the way I am not sure I have said hello previously.

Try putting the hay in a tray or litter box. I used to put it directly on the floor of their cage but it made a complete mess of the fleece. The trays I have lined with newspaper contain the mess and also keeps the whole cage cleaner as they mostly go to the toilet in the tray.

:agr:

They much prefer hay on the ground - it's more natural for them . A lot of members on here use hay trays to " contain " the mess I suggest you have a look for threads on here about hay trays for ideas .

Hello! Haha he loves to sit on the hay too, but after a while he poop on it

Hello! I will try it, but it's like he wants to make everything a mess, he push the hay with his head, then the hay is spread all over his cage and he is popcorning, the other piggie that I adopted before a while is much more quiet and he don't mess with everything

Hello! Yes I will have a look, but my piggie is playing with everything, whatever I am going to do he will make a mess, at least my other piggie is playing only with his toys and not with everything

I use the lids off plastic A4 paper storage boxes for hay trays. They are only 3cm high so easy for the piggies to get into without tipping them over. I have two at the bottom of their cage lined with newspaper, I change and wash them out every morning. This works really well for me. They pull their hay all over the fleece, I think this is natural forage behaviour? I brush the fleece every morning over the washing line to keep the hairs and hay to a minimum, so it’s not so long to get them all ready when I’m washing them.

I personally use a large cat litter tray for their hay. My piggies like to poo in the tray so its like a two in one! They also seen to enjoy digging in the hay and making more hiding homes. I have plenty of homes for them to use but they still like to play in the hay. The tray keeps the hay mainly contained. if they do drag it out from time to time as mine do, just put it back in! trays can look nice in the cage too, they do not look to sloppy if it matches your cage for your piggies!

I have just started using a hay try in the hutch and the piggies love it! I use the base of an old plastic cat carrier that I got from the car boot for £1 last summer.

Mine have a mix of hay trays and hay racks. I use grow bag trays to put the hay racks on to keep mess to a minimum. Primrose is standing in a shallow growbag tray.

79EB4057-BDAF-48D8-92C6-B7D19680EC04.webp I use dog beds for my herd. Puppy pads in the bottom and pile the hay in on top. The piggies eat the hay and pop and wee and it is absorbed by the pads in the bottom. I have used cat litter trays and small boxes before now but I needed something bigger for 8 piggies.
