My piggies have only been in their cage for about 2 weeks. As they are only 11weeks it was unlikely that they were going to be able to reach the hay from the hay rack so i put it on the ground. But i want to be more hygienic and make sure that they are not eating any soiled hay. So i put some in the hay rack 2 days ago but they havent touched so ive had to put it back on the floor again.

Any advice on getting them to use the hay racks?

Try putting the rack just above the floor so they are not actually soiling it, then as they get bigger it can be moved a bit higher.

You could always put the eating hay in loo roll holders as well to keep if fresh. If your guineas are very small, cut down the length of the loo roll holder so they dont get their heads stuck in it. xx

I'm having the same problem in that Maisy has always been used to eating hay from the floor, so I carried on with this when I had her and Daisy. I have since a week ago, introduced one of the green racks from Pets at Home. They do wander over to it and eat from it, but I have to admit that I worry in case they do not eat from it, that they are not getting any hay, and then subsequently, put it on the floor in a pile for them. rolleyes (I'm not helping with their training, am I?) ;)

Percevere with your little ones, I'm sure over the next few weeks, months, they will soon adjust to the hay rack. Good luck with it anyway and let us know their progress. :)

The rescue I got mine from don't allow hay racks because they think pigs should be allowed to eat off the ground (because that's where their mouths are). I have the same problem as you, though. If I'm home I change the hay several times a day to make sure it' always fresh, but days when I'm gone a lot I usually put hay in a slit up loo roll or bunch up some hay with a re-sealable ziptie to the hay crate wall. I also stuff big or small paper bags with hay and they love that!

I'm going to try out the toilet roll thing and hope that helps. Its just so annoying having to keep refreshing the hay because its been soiled and also very costly!
