At the moment we have the hay on the floor at the far end of cage. would it be better to have a hay rack and if so what type would be best?

We use hay racks in our cages, however the hay does fall through and ends up on the floor anyway when the pigs pull it out, and they dont eat the stuff that ends up pn the floor, they stand on it, pee and poo on it, but you can pick the metal ones up from pet shops fairly cheap.

I tried both of my pairs with both when I first got them. I found that they ate it off the floor. They never eat all of it but the manage most. I just let the pigs decide as I did with their water as well. I don't know if I am doing right as I have sort of muddled through and taught myself until I found this forum but I though I would share my experience.

Be careful with wire hay racks if you have young or small piggies as they can get stuck in them The solid plastic ones are fine ,or ones with small gaps in the wire.

I like this one but don't think it would be very sturdy:

I have used a bath toy bag that my son had when he was smaller. It's hung up in the cage just like a haynet and my girls love it, even get in it when it gets low!

Gemma, Ginny and Saffy.

When Fleur had her babies I found one inside the wire hayrack so took it out so instead i use toilet rolls, paper bags and small tissue boxes. I also have a wooden hamster tube that I also stuff full of hay.

Once my boys were big enough, I bought a wire rack. They empty the contents and like to make a "tent" out of the hay!

I have a hay rack and hay on the floor- cause I wanted them to have acces to clean hay, but they seem to prefer eating the floor hay (whilst lying in it) and hardly eat from the hay rack. My thoughts are, if you provide both, you cant go wrong... right? I also use toilet rolls, empty boxes and a hamster ball made of hay to stick hay in to mix it up a bit. Love the idea of a hay bag though.:) Might try that!

I provide both a patch of hay that my piggy loves to sleep on and a hay rack right next to it and he prefers to eat the hay out of that :)

I have a hay rack for my piggies but the second Ive filled it with hay, Toby knocks it off with his nose and runs about the cage wheeking. Cheeky boy! And then they both proceed to eat the hay off the floor. rolleyes

Smudgy always knocks his off so I have tied it on so he has to pull it out to eat, Bwhahahaa
Mojo is a good pig and eats his out the rack

I want to tie it on so that it actually does what it was made for.......but at the same time, don't want to ruin little Toby's fun. He runs about wheeking after he's done it.

I have a hay rack and hay on the floor for bedding too.
Velvet and Onyx think it's a fab place to lie in...... rolleyes
When ever i clean (twice daily) they both rush over to see what lush bits of hay might have been hidden underneath :(|)

When I first got Lily I used a hay rack but I noticed that she wasn't really touching it but all the hay I'd put down for her hidey hole was gone. I tried putting a pile next to her dish and when I got up in the morning it was all gone. Think she got a bit confused and didn't know what to do with the rack. Milly's cage didn't have a place for a hay rack so I just put lots of it down in the cage. Now the two of the wheek away when they hear the hay bag and stick their noses out waiting for me to put a big pile in the middle of their home :)
