I am looking for a good quality hay for my piggies. I recently bought some Alfalfa King Timothy hay from P@H. It smells lovely and sweet and is nice and green but it's quite straw-like and i worry they will injure their eyes so they have that in a hay rack sort of thing ( made from a grid bent in half ). They have hay from Wilko to rummage in and in their pigloos but i'm not happy with the quality of it. Does anyone have a recommendation? I'm in Bedfordshire,UK.

Personally i like the Excel hays and Oxbow hays. The oxbow is sterilised and the Excel is tested for fungal/mites. Theyre really good quality if you dont mind paying a bit for it. Personally as it makes up the majority of my piggies diet i prefer to spend money on it.

I sometimes buy hay from my local garden centre in Stanmore, Middlesex,it comes in a jumbo sized bale from a farm and costs £9 which only lasts 3 to 4 weeks( they eat loads)
In the summer it dawned on me to go to my local farm, which is a huge equine farm, where I bought a huge bale of hay which when broken down filled up 5 black bags! This only cost me £6.
The quality is amazing, the hay has to be a little bit spiky because that's the part they enjoy and need the most. The smell is divine! :))

Where abouts is this? I have a lot of small mouths to feed.

Hay for pets is great i got the big 9.5kg for £16 and it was massive and my piggies love it, i prefer the meadow mine didnt like the ings or timothy

Thanks everyone, ordered the big bag of meadow from hay for pets and going to keep buying this one as they love it, just means they can have extra to play in now!

I just ordered the sample from hay for pets just to see what they like (or dont like).
How much would you get (In black bags) if its 1.8kilo?

We use quite a bit of Pillow Wad meadow hay for the base of our piggies diet. It usually smells sweet and is soft and cheap enough to give them a big pile to hide in. Food you can hide in is piggies number one favourite thing :) but really any good quality meadow hay is good. You can buy it by the bale from horse supplies shops if you have room.

Our chinchilla get mainly Oxbow Westen Timothy hay with some of their other hays for variety, but it's far too expensive to give 4 guineas all the time. I suspect it's a little high in nutrients for my little tubbies as well. So they get a small amount of fancy hay as a treat each day. They also adore the dried dandelion treat from the herbals range.

The Hay Experts do a good range of fancy hays http://www.thehayexperts.co.uk/ although generally its chinchilla where you need to rotate hay to get them to eat more - never met a guinea pig that turned its nose up at any good quality hay :)

I've got 4 and I am fairly generous with it - I stuff both haylofts daily as well as four paper bags ( sometimes twice a day ) and I've only just started on the second bag. I think I got them delivered on the 13th of Dec so one bag has lasted over two weeks which may not seem like much but as I said, I have been extremely generous with it - I probably could have made one bag last a lot longer but it's Christmas! ;) The quality is miles better than the shop bought stuff ( and better than the locally grown bales I tried from the saddelry up the road, which was awful stuff ) I'd recommend trying a big bag and seeing how long it lasts you.

Ok thanks, i'll have to make a note of the one they like the most then try a bag :).
They do get hay for bedding atm (Switching to fleece soon though) so it may last longer untill i make the switch.
I'm buying small bags of eating hay from my LPS they dont last that long really.

the 1.8kg lasts for around 7-10 days for 4 guinea pigs. that was in the summer and i was pretty stiingy on hay as they had lots of fresh grass then.

I think id have to go with the bigger bags otherwise it would be gone in a few days like you said.
Thanks i'll stop HiJacking the thread now :)).
