My piggies are quite fussy about how their hay is served!
They have cheap hay for bedding but I like them to always have some that is clean. I started with a hay rack but they would not touch hay out of that. I bought two hay balls (one that hangs and one that rolls and both of which jingle) and they are much more popular but I noticed that one ball will be favourite for a few days and then that will go out of fashion and the other will be more popular. In other words, if I want to keep them eating plenty of hay, I have to keep finding new ways to make it exciting. To this end, I was looking at a "hay ring" in a pet shop. I suspected they would like it but, at just under £4, it seemed a bit pricey for something that would not keep verey long, so I thought I would have a go at making one. This proved very easy, extremely popular and cost practically nothing more than the cost of the hay they eat from it!
If I were more technically competant, I would show you a picture (yes, I have tried Photobucket, as per instructions, but could not make if work) but I will try to describe how I made it. I took a bunch of cheap hay in my hand (picking out the longest strands I could) and held it in the middle. I then took a similar bunch of "best" hay and held the two bunches together and began to twist them as if making a fat rope. I continued to twist until the two ends began to curl round to meet each other (mothers of little girls may understand what I mean when I say it is a little like making a ballet bun). Then all I had to do was to bind the two ends together with a piece of string which I then used to suspend the ring from the roof of the run. The end result looks like a mini wreath. The piggies love biffing it and chewing at it.
To keep the hay fresh, I untie it every couple of days and add a fresh bunch of best hay before doing it up again.
Hope this makes sense and is useful.
