Well my piggies have farm hay the farm where i get it from as run out of hay and wont have any more for a month becouse of the rain and i have 4 cages my dad is going to try and find some form somewhere eles well he is going to have to

is anyone eles who has farm hay having this problem

Yep farmers hay is not good at mo,am having to buy from pets at home ,very expensive and not brilliant either!

Hay is going to be a nightmare this year with the weather.
They cant cut it till they get a dry spell for it to dry and the Rain is going to rot it.This wont just effect hay though readi grass will run out aswell as a lot of feeds
We have just managed to get 100 bales of hay so i am not in a panic YET!

We had a temporary Blip with our Readigrass but were told it shouldn't be bad. Rain and storms don't generally destroy grass and Readigrass is dried manually, they just need to be able to cut it (is what our local farm have said). We've had a new load in and been told not to expect problems. Hay on the other hand ::) is declining in quality as its being left out in the field (growing as grass) and its very unlikely at our local farm that we'll get a second cut which is the one my guineas like best :) We still have last years supplies and I've ordered some to last me a while but its Timothy and Rye which isn't the best. Unfortunately an online retailer also buys from the farm leaving us locals in short supply ::)

I would recommend phoning round farm shops and asking them if they have any- look under 'farm shops' in Yellow Pages'.

I feed Haylage to my pigs and they love it so dont have any problem getting it .

What exactly is Haylage? Is it lightly molassed? Like the Mollichaff from Badminton.

Just be careful that the farm hay you get at this time doesnt contain creepys :o

The OHs nana has said because of the shortage, whatever is left is going to contain a few unwanteds, so we are buying from wilkos instead of her farm at the moment :(

we do have a hay shortage here, but only certain parts, my supplier still has fab meadow hay & I'm also buying a packed chopped grass from them , which they actually prefer !
my friend on the other side of bristol bought some really old, horrid hay :o

The supplier to our farm shop has just got Readigrass in so you may be in luck next time :)

I guess haylage would be dangerous if it heated up, do you feed it in bowls AH?

Oooo I'm coming to your open day so may ask for directions please ! Need some Readigrass I just cant beat the stuff for the bunnies and piggies :)

and i cant really afford to be buying hay from pets at home or anywhere eles it will cost my £100's with 4 cages who need cleaning out 2 to 3 tiems a week

I assume you're using the hay as a bedding? If you are you could get a different bedding and just have hay racks and a pile of hay for them to eat, it would use much less.

We don't seem to be having a problem around here *yet*..Infact, I bought hay today and the feed store had loads.

I brought another 10 bags of the Dust Free Hay last week without any problems, although I noticed that their largest bales are now showing as out of stock :(

An alternative bedding like Aubiose or Medibed will save your hay. I forgot to ask if Medibed will be affected but it probably will.

The hay that I use is only really any good if you have only a couple of piggies.
I buy the small packs from Asda, the ones that are packed in a kind of portions way.
The big packs are brown and long strands, just like everywhere else that sells it round here, but the small packs are lovely and green and the piggies are loving them.
Its not usually this nice, so I'm guessing its just a seasonal thing, but whilst it lasts, Ill stick with it.
And its only a couple of quid.
The big packs are only around a fiver too and last a lot longer than you would imagine, its very well compressed into the packaging.

Where is the Oxbow Timothy or Orchard hay get grown, does anyone know if it's a US thing?
I wonder if that will be affected...

Oxbow hay is grown in America, I have hay in that is grown in Europe and Canada, for sale on Planet Guinea.

I have a horse so tend to keep plenty of hay in. Personally I wouldnt feed a piggie or bunnies haylage, it is a wetter forage and could cause tummy problems. I do feed readigrass though and now readigrass isnt about I'm feeding just grass. Here is a link about haylage.

I have three large cages in my room which I clean out twice a day, and it costs me £20 approx a month for 5 large bags of the meadow hay from the pet shops, I also buy around 4 bags of readigrass a month too. You must be very heavy handed with it! I give mine what I consider generous piles each day, you must be layering it in!

I assume you mean small bags of redigrass as the ones I buy are the horse size which cost £8 - £10

how long does the horse size bag last you I was thinking of getting some this time is it any good?

:) Big fat pigs sounds good AH, I think I'll give the Haylage a try!
Go to a farm where they keep horses and ask them ifyou can buy a bag off them , i love the smell of it , rather like a sweet cabbagey smell and your pigs will love it , another good point is you never get runners on your pigs like you do with hay .

my dad got me some hay today from some farmer its really goofd nice and yellow it looks bitter then the hay we get from the other farmer

I buy Readigrass or Dodson and Horrell Just Grass in large horse sized bales. They vary in price fro £7.50 - £9.00. Mine have their bowls filled up twice a day and a bale lasts for around a year for 2 piggies. It doesn't go musty or smelly as long as it is stored somewhere dry.
