My guinea pigs are still throwing hay all over the place in my cage even though I put a small container beneath the hay rack....... Just wondering what you guys do to feed your guys hay.

BQ would it be safe to put sandpaper on a ramp in order to file down nails? just a random thought I had.

Ive put sand paper on my lots ramps in their house. And its not caused any problems. Wears their front claws down really well. Not so much the back.

As with the Hay, there isnt much you can do about it. Piggies are just generally messy animals. I just feed hay in hay racks with the fleece and it always goes everywhere. Just part of having piggies i guess. I also have a hay loft for them where they can eat and snuggle up in the hay and it generally stays there, a bit comes down the ramp.

x.

Thanks guys! I'm considering just putting the hay on the floor because my hay rack drops all over the place and the hay just ends up on the floor anyways :(|)

Also, I'll be trying the sandpaper thing soon.

My piggies have a veg rack you can buy from most hardware stores. It helps contain the hay but is big enough for two piggies to fit in:

I paid 99p for mine, line with newspaper and load it up :(|) Easily cleaned as well. Someone else on here uses these too and said she has a two tier and her piggies use them as bunk beds :(|)

I have given up and now put the hay in a pile on the floor. They prefer to eat it that way anyway.

I've struggled with hay placement, too. Here's a few things I've tried...maybe it will help you?

A container with holes in the middle of the pen is my current set up: https://i881.photobucket.com/albums...All Mine/Loofah Sue and Sundae/DSC_0106-2.jpg

Have used a box with shavings and a hand-made hay rack: https://i881.photobucket.com/albums...All Mine/Loofah Sue and Sundae/DSC_0304-1.jpg

Also used a petstore cage with shavings and the same handmade hay rack:

This one I tried to use toilet paper rolls and filled them with hay...and those stupid dangly ball things with the bell on the end...I couldn't keep enough hay in there for them. But, they did love the toilet paper roll stuffed things.

I think we all have to accept they will always be messy !

Just like i had to accept no matter how many times a day i hoover there will always be hay on the floor! i reckon they know "quick shes hoovered kick the hay out" grrr

Haha! ZaraPiggie6, my girls are that way with poos! I'll vacuum them all up...walk by just ten minutes later, and there are 10 more poos!

Oh yeah they definatly know! they hold it in then when you clean let it all go!

There conspiring against us!

Hay's much more fun if it's in a big pile and you can jump on it, go under it and lie in it while eating! Talk about playing with your food! :))
