So a huge package just arrived for my up comming piggies! And in the package was my hay for them. So how do you store your hay to make it last? Is it best to keep it in its packaging until use? Any advice would be appriciated!

I don't store it in anything special, but it's kept in a kitchen cupboard :)

I buy it by the bail & store any excess bales in the boot of my car. In the house I store it in a big blue bag made specially for storing bales of hay in. Something like this:-

There was a thread @helen105281 started after her friends piggies became poorly after eating hay that had fungal spores on it, there are photos attached to the thread the tip is to check your hay when you buy it and store it in a breathable bag eg a duvet cover, pillow case or a bag as shown above then keep it some where that is always cool and dry.
I brought a large bag from hay for pets and i thought It was ok to leave in the plastic bag in my garage until I read that :)

i keep it in a laundry wicker basket (it has a cotton liner) and a cardboard box. if it arrives in plastic, i go through it as i transfer it to make sure it's ok. just don't keep it in plastic as it can cause the hay to sweat.

I keep a bale of hay in a loose bin liner in a green wheelie bin outside.

I keep mine in one of these, its not airtight but does keep it dry we dont have any indoor space large enough for storing bales of hay and this box is kept near our outdoor hutches. This fits one traditional bale or one hay for pets bale with space for toys etc next to it.

Thanks for all the tips and advice. I have fairly large cupboards in the unit the Hamsters cages are on so if i clear some space in that (lots of xmas decorations in it) and get a hay bag or pillow case it should be fine? I love the outdoor storage box idea! We don't really have storage in this flat except for kitchen cupboards so I have units everywhere as it is xD

You learn something new every day! I will be taking mine out of it's plastic bag when i get home :)
