Hi. This morning when I fed my guinea pigs breakfast and hay, one of the boys got over excited running through the hay and had some sticking out of the corner of his eye. I tried to get it out but now it seems to have gone under his eye lid. Will it come out on it’s own?
He seems fine at the moment, more interested in eating and doing his usually thing.
Thanks

I’d take him to the vets if it’s gone under his eye lid, it could become infected, especially if it’s cut him , hay can be pretty sharp especially on delicate piggy’s eyes :(

I agree. You’re best to take him to the vet especially if you don’t know what you’re doing to have it removed. The vet cal also check for ulcers due to the hay poke in which case eye drops will be needed

I can see the hay. Should I try to remove it?

Please have him see by a vet today because it may take two people to extract the hay carefully without damaging the eye further. The vet will also check whether there is any damage to the eyeball that can cause ulceration/infection.

Blooming hay pokes! I’m dealing with one here, too. Hope you get on ok at the vets.

Fingers crossed the vet can get it out and that is hasn't done too much damage!

Sorry to hear about the hay poke.
It’s not nice but can be cleared up with eye drops.
Of course getting a guinea pig to cooperate with you on that adds a challenge to the day.
Hope all turns out well

Hi just an update. The vet was able to get the hay out fairly easily yesterday and she said it doesn’t look like there has been any damage caused! :yahoo: When I fed them this morning his eye still looks the normal colour. Thank you all for your advice and I hope everyone else’s hay poke is sorted as easily. X
