Hey,

I was checking my boys over tonight and found one of them has hay stuck up his bum! I tried to get it but he doesn’t even like being in that position and is quite nervous so I don’t want to freak him out. He seems totally fine in himself. Will it come out on its own or do I have to do it? If so what’s the best way?

Thank you!

Try sitting him down with his back against your tummy and with your spare hand pull it out VERY GENTLY.

Hi! Unfortunately you will have to pull it out gently. Please check that it hasn't done any damage if it is a hard bit of hay. If necessary, ask somebody else to hold him if you are not feeling confident doing it yourself. Your insecurity will transmit but you can use guinea pig whispering tricks to assert your authority and wangle a bit more compliance.
Understanding Prey Animal Instincts, Guinea Pig Whispering And Cuddling Tips

The scent gland in guinea pigs is located just in front of the genitals; guinea pigs use to wipe their bottom on the ground to scent mark their territory. That is the reason why stuck hay is not all that uncommon. ;)

Thank you. I will give it a go now. I’ve only had them a few weeks and he’s the shy one. We were making so much progress too so I really don’t want to upset him!

The relief from having the hay out will outweigh any wrestling. If you use a mix of love and authority in terms of piggy whispering with lots of encouragement and praise, you will get quite far. ;)

He needs to get used to regular checks of his boar bits anyway.

I find, even with new skittish additions, that when they realise you are helping them they are less freaked than you Might expect. I bet he will feel much better without it, sadly boars are notorious for collecting bits of hay and stuff in their sacs.

I’ve tried and he’s being so good but it’s not coming out. Not sure what best to do

:agr: if it's not easy to come out. Let us know how you get on.
Thanks everyone for the help. I got it! Put him in some lukewarm water for a soak for a bit to see if that helped. Don’t think it actually did.... I think I just got braver cos I got it after he dried up a bit. And he didn’t squeak or anything. He’s munching away on his hay with his brother now.... hopefully not getting anymore stuck places just yet! 🙈 Now I’ve done it once I’ll be fine about doing it next tome. I think I was just being too gentle and scared of hurting him. I’m a new pet parent so am likely to get a bit worried about any little issues that come up for a bit! x

Glad you got it out. Some boys can be terrible for gathering hay and hairs (I use fleece bedding). Not my favourite job 🤢 but it needs done. 😂

my other boy now has hair up his bum! 🙄 they are messy pups! He’s the calmer of the two and I’ve managed to get some out already and will give it another go in a bit. At least I’m not freaking out about it tonight. I might give him a soak to try and help but either way they’re both getting the hair around their bums trimmed this weekend if they’ll let me!
