Lol that's ok @Danielle Smith

@ayemee it's not so much my guinea's being picky, it's because Aidan got a thistle stuck in his hand, that was the second time since opening the bag, I don't want the guinea's to accidentally eat one, it's just a good job that hay is something you put in by hand. I've ordered the meadow hay now anyway. Do you think I'd be able to get away with putting that unused hay in the garden recycling? (Asking Aymee because we're both from Nottingham), wouldn't want to pass the hay on to anyone with small animals.

Yeah ouch! Sounds nasty... Yes I put my hay which was a bad batch in the garden waste. Its just dried grass after all. Really hope you have better luck with the meadow hay. x

@ayemee I've been trying the meadow hay with my lot... the snobby little so and so's don't seem to be eating much of it :( Starting to stress me out now, I already have bad anxiety at the moment. Do you reckon they'll eat it if we just keep shoving it at them? lol. It's not like they aren't eating it at all, they just aren't eating it as well as they eat Ings and I can't get that one while it's full of sticks atm.

I use the superhay as my local farm shop stocks it and I currently have two bales, both of which are VERY different. One is stalky and very long strands (that's in my rabbit shed) and the other is soft and much shorter strands (which the piggies are having). Unfortunately, as a natural product, you are always going to find differences in batches and possibly some unexpected things like twigs or thistles. Just pull those bits out!

@Mackers – I understand that you get the odd this and that in hay, I’ve been buying it for two years, even had some plastic in a batch, that isn’t the problem though.

Hay number 1 – There are so many sticks, dried leaves and other rubbish that it’s not easy to keep picking it all out, the company has even called me to say they’ve noticed it as well and suggested the meadow hay which is what they are having now, there is nothing wrong with the meadow hay, the guinea’s are just being fussy. I’m not buying a bag of sticks.

Hay number 2 – It’s not easy to pick thistles out of it I’m afraid, it’s well packed and you don’t find the thistles until they stick in your hand.

My other problem is, I am worried that if I give them either way that they could get injured.

Take care.

I found more thistles in my superhay. It's getting a bit annoying now.
We will probably finish this bale but I won't be ordering it again.

What other hays do people recommend? I might try hay for pets but I don't really want to buy ings if it has loads of sticks in it. Has anyone tried timothy and rye?

Oh how annoying! :( sounds like you're having some stress. I don't think you should give in with it yet. Keep offering it to them. I'm currently using the Just for pets meadow hay and they're really liking it. But can't really afford it to have it regular.

I'm doing an order from vet uk on Friday to see what their meadow hay is like. Drop me a PM if you need a hand with anything. If they really won't touch the meadow hay you currently have I can always pop some of mine over to you if you want to try them on that. I'm off tomorrow and Tuesday so give me a message if you need any :)

hehe :D I'm finding it all a bit overwhelming at the mo with having three guinea's with health problem and then Big E starting squeaking when passing stools and I was like omg not another one... he went to the vets and he has hard stools so it's hurting him to pass them, he's on emprid and she said to try olive oil, I was quite relieved when Aidan called and said it was that...

Bless you. Which vets do you take them to now? Drop me a message if you need to vent or stress. I don't mind at all. X

Thanks :) They still go to The Vet but we only use Laura, Ines or Jessica when she's in. It's really hard to keep going back and fourth to Alfreton all of the time. I wish there was a piggie specialist in Nottingham.

Me too. :(

Yeah I always use Jessica. I really trust her.

@ayemee I don't fully trust her to be honest, she has misdiagnosed one of ours before and she's not and thorough as Ines or Laura. She is willing to find out things though if she doesn't know the answer, like with Jericho, the stuff she's doing since we lost Cesaro in regards to the parasite he had is cool but a bit late, we've lost Cesaro due to lack of knowledge, same as Badger (different vet) and Sheamus. That's why I said I won't adopt any more unless I have somewhere to take them for treatment.

I recently switched to meadow hay from a local farm which my pigs love, no thistles in the bales I brought. Before that I used to buy pure pastures meadow hay, maxi pack. Which you can order online or the range sell it for £3.49 per bag. I would recommend this hay, I never found anything bad in it and I used it for over a year. There was the occasional twig but really good quality hay other than that, only thing is it is hard to pull out of the bag (due to being compressed). I just used to take it out of the bag and transfer it to a garden bag, much easier to deal with.
