Hay tray ideas

My pair have a cat litter tray as a hay tray and it has worked brilliantly. They spend lots of time in it whilst the hay is contained and easy to clean.

They are getting on a bit now though and I notice that Jenny particularly is finding it harder to jump in and out. She got a bit stuck the other day.

Ive tried putting a bridge in but she is too dim to work it out.

Does anyone have a 3 sided tray, or any ideas on how I can cut this one without leaving sharp edges? I feel like I’d need some sort of hot knife to do it safely but don’t have one.
 
Do you have any spare correx around? If so, or you can get some, then you could make a three sided tray from that.
Alternatively (or perhaps temporarily) and admittedly a little messier, just a sheet of newspaper or a puppy pad (which would be better from an absorbency point of view), with hay on top?
 
Correx is a great idea. My worry there is that they think it is delicious 😂 They live to get under their fleece and have chewed holes in the correx beneath 😂
 
Oh dear...that might not work then!
I'm sure you could, cut the side off of a normal cat litter tray, I’m just not sure how easy it would be!
I use a couple of corner litter trays for my rabbits and they seem to be slightly lower fronted (depending on what your current trays are like, I guess) - whether they would be low enough for her I don’t know, but it is something you could look into
 
You could use slide binders over the edges of a correx litter tray, that's what I've done to stop cheeky nibbles.

Else I've had great success with an under bed storage box with a hole cut in it using a Dremel, though a hacksaw or Stanley knife and a little sanding does the same thing, which you can all get from Poundland!

EDIT: I've got it! Look for a potting tray. There is a tiny lip but guinea pigs can easily trot over and it still contains hay.

That’s a fab idea! Ive actually got one of those potting trays in my greenhouse, for potting! But it didn’t occur to me that it would make such a good hay tray!

I have this potting tray and bought explicitly for use as a hay tray and it works really well. i especially like that the back is a little higher than other trays, so helps when pushed against a C&C cage as it gives them some privacy at the back. and agree, the front lip is easier for them to get in and out of compared to other trays.

This is a brill idea I will be ordering one! The boys keep tipping over their cat litter trays so it makes more mess!

I bought a set of boxes from amazon for £14 (this is the biggest one) and a piece of gutter pipe. I cut a circle in the side of the box with a Stanley knife, stuck the gutter bit in it, put a cable tie round the inside of the pipe bit and ta dar! I am so chuffed with it and the girls LOVE it! They sit in it, rummage around in it, munch in it and it stops all the hay from going everywhere! Plus, apart from the tail, I thought the little characters on the side looked a bit like one of the guinea pigs 🤣🤣.

Maybe try putting a large rock or something as a step up!😃
 
I use a large gravel tray that’s about 3cm high - but the potting tray looks fab so I may try one of those to see how my rabble react to it!
