Hi, I usually purchase my hay from Pets at Home and have noticed that the last batch that I purchased smelles different to the last few bags that I have brought. Is it usual for hay to be different despite the fact that it is brought from the same supplier ?

I know i've noticed a change in my meadow hay, but i live in OZ.
I think you'll find it's seasonal for changes........hopefully somebody near you can advise better tho :)

Well if you think about it, PAH must sell a huge volume of hay, so they must have to buy it in from a number of different sources. It could be that the new stuff is a different grass variety, or that it was just harvested at a different time or under different weather conditions.

As long at it doesn't smell musty or dusty and the pigs eat it, it shouldn't be a problem.

I used to buy 150 bales in each autumn for the horses and the quality of what I got would vary from year to year, depending on what the growing season was like and how good the weather was when it was baled.

i am finding the P@H hay varies from bale to bale

the last one i got was really light weight like hair

good news though, my neighbour has a friend that cuts their own hay
and i am getting a bale for free

yipeeeeeeeeee

Lucky you bullseye - I am considering purchasing a bale from our local farm. Has anyone got any recommendations as to where to get the best hay from ?

I buy store bought bag hay & sometime's that's even different I think it depends on the weather.

The quality of the hay may be dependent on the time of year, as well. :)
