Just received my first order from hay for pets. Looks lush and green, however I expected it to be softer. From what ive read I thought the ings was softer, the bag contains very long strands, wouldnt be suitable for bedding.
I feel like I'm being overly fussy as shop bought hay tends to be very short cut and here I am moaning this is too long lol.
Have a piggy with an eye ulcer receiving vet treatment, so very protective and worrying this hay may cause further pokes :(

I have done my first order from them, so will put it in their fleecy hay bags if it is stalky. Could you chop it up a bit? I thnk it depends on the weather how the harvest will be unfortunately.

all the hays from there seem to have some very long strands at certain times. just cut them down and they should be fine :) we get the meadow hay for bedding and then have the timothy and rye in kitchen roll tubes around the cage :)

Piggies are munching away, so it must be tasty :) I think I'm being very over protective of my sick pig. Cant remember ever being this cautious with my kids lol.
I shall try chopping it a little.
Can't fault the service, ordered sunday and arrived today, with tracking details sent by email. Would definitely recommend them x

I use the meadow hay for bedding, it is really soft. Thought I would try ings fir a change, haven't opened the bag yet and now I'm a bit worried that it wont be suitable - will have to have a look this afternoon!

I'm sure it will be fine, I'm very picky lol. 4 of my piggies are now fast asleep exhausted from the hay feast.

I'm picky as well.Got the range hay and thought it was too hard as I don't use a hay rack so donated it. Will only use soft hay for litter trays

You are totally right about the Ings hay - it is not as soft as the meadow hay. Will see how we get on with it as bedding but might have to go back to the meadow hay again!

I find both ings and timothy hay to be more course than meadow hay typically :-) I use baled hay from a farm now at £3.50 for a full traditional bale (~20kg) I cannot fault it so far!

My mother-in-law has 2 horses so whenever I see her she gives me a bag with a couple of slices of hay in it from one of her bales. Think she pays £4 for a bale.

my pet shop buys hay in bulk and bags it up herself. Only 90 pence a bag and usually really nice, green and lovely smelling. One bag lasts my 8 girls about 2half days

I get the Timothy and Rye Hay from Hay4Pets and mine is really coarse.
Thankfully haven't had any hay pokes only Maple who got a fine bit of hay in her eye...

Do want to look into some finer stuff more for bedding though :)

You don't want it to be dusty or smell stale. It also wants to.be long strands

Wouldn't chopping the hay leave sharp ends? Just a thought!
