I still look apon myself as a newbie to owning guinea pigs.

I have followed many a thread about hay and have come to the conclusion that it is such a natural product that it's difficult to recommend any brand.
I always like to have some Timothy in stock . I recently got some online and, quite frankly, I was very disappointed - It's so spikey and is the same texture as straw.
In desperation, I have just bought some Alfalfa King Timothy on the way home today. The last time I bought this, it was average BUT the pack I have got today is fantastic! It is soft, green and smells really fresh.

I buy all my hay from a local farm who grows it mainly for their horse & pony. It's lovely stuff & it's that cheap I use lots fo their bedding too. I've bought expensive hay in plastic bags but it's all too dry & dusty. Hay should be allowed to breathe not be sealed in a bag. In your area there should be lots of places selling hay you could even see if your local stables will sell you some. Once you've found a good supplier you'll never buy the bags again.

I really want to buy bales but me and my partner don't drive so there isn't anywhere we can get that kind of thing :( What would you say was the best hay sold in shops?

If you are happy to buy online, I like the Meadow Hay from Hay for Pets

I second Hay for Pets. My pigs LOVE the Ings hay and they deliver within a few days of ordering, which is great. You can try the samples of the different hays before committing to a larger bag.

I've bought some real duff batches from shops.

I bought some hay from my local pet shop which looked OK ubtil I got it out of the bag. It was all chopped up into small lengths. I checked it out in the end.

Will have a look at that, thanks for the recommendation. Usually we are putting them on Morrison's hay because it's our nearest supermarket and it's nice and cheap! I think the big bags are ok, if you buy the small ones it's all cut up short but the bigger ones have more longer parts and variety in the bags and the pigs seem happy with it.

You can get bad bales too. I bought some from a animal feeds supplier recommended by another member. The first bale was OK & the piggies loved it but I got 2 more bales & there was lots of thorny thistle type pieces in it. I inadvertently gave some to my piggies & one of them caught her neck on it leaving a nasty sore cut which I was able to first aid myself. I'm now back to my original supplier who's baler had broken but they're selling in in big bin bags @ £3 each or 2 for £5. It's organic quality without the certificate. If you're in the Northallerton, Middlesbrough, Darlington area it's ideal.

I've found Natures Own (sold at The Range) is consistently good quality, good value at £3.99 for 4kg too :) I've just bought a bag of Timothy and Rye from Hay for Pets and it's lovely, the boys love it and it's really nice quality

Playing in there new hay... Though I'm not impressed with the hay itself... Its more like straw but they will have to make do with it as I bought a large horse bale at a local feed store

That happened to me too. I bought some hay that was a bit too spikey for my liking. I was going to get rid of it but my guinea pigs love it.

I give them some as a treat every now and then -in an open area but never use it as bedding.

I do buy the Alfalfa King Timothy hay, mine love it, there's barely any waste ever but it is very stalky so I don't leave it in big piles for them :) It is great for their teeth though! I've tried lots of hay over the years, but I got fed up with hay mites & having to bathe the piggies so now I get this hay as it is imported from the US it's sterile so no nasty mites in it :) They also love camomile hay. it smells gorgeous & it much softer for them. I microwave it for 40 seconds in the hope it will kill anything off first though! Not sure if that works but after 3 years of having them, these are the first piggies I have had that have never had hay mites :)
