What hay do you feed your piggies? Where do you buy it from and how long does it last (and how many piggies is that for too)?

Mine have had hay from a local feed shop for over a year now but it's really dusty at the moment :-\ and it makes me cough getting it out so I'm not really comfortable feeding it to the piggies..they're still having it for now but I want to give them some different stuff. Where do you guys buy hay from? What do your piggies like?

Also, what do you store your hay in and how do you get it from that to the cage without hay going EVERYWHERE? My piggies hay is stored in a cardboard box and it goes all over the floor trying to get it into their cage.

Thanks :) I don't mind how much it costs really but it needs to reasonable.

I buy a bale of hay for all 28 of my piggies from a farm shop O0
It lasts a few weeks ;)
I used to get a bale and separate the sections and put 1 section in a black bag and pile them up O0

Hi Jane,

I've tried a few since the summer, a large bale (which was too dusty), Barn dried (which was ok but difficult to get out) Thick meadow hay (which stunk and wasn't high quality) and other thick hay (which was ok but the last lot was a bit stringy and not good quality)

Soooo we are back on Herbage, my pigs love it and they are getting treats from the dandilion in it. I go through a lot of it about 3 bags a week but I've figured it's worth the money as it is good quality.

I guess you could always get a Timothy and mix it with a herbage. I think I'll stick with Herbage though, I really like it.

ive just got the 1kg of mountain hay from pampered piggies, i expected it to be a small bale but its in a big brown bag and theres loads of it! ive had it 2 days between 7 of them and i havent made much of a dint in the bag! i also but the bunny's delight in 500g bag for them too they love that :)

I was wondering about the mountain hay, I wasn't sure how big the bag would be. May try this as well as Herbage. (I get all my supplies from Sally now saves me travelling miles for things!) :D

Thanks guys.

I might try that spudnik..hmm, how much is 1kg? could you take a piccy with something to compare it to for size? I've thought about buying it before but I can't imagine how much 1kg would be.

I get a bale from a farmer 4ft wide and 2 ft high it lasted me 3 and a half weeks between 7 pigs and cleaned shed 4 times. the pigs love it was paying £10 per week for 3 bags from the pet shop. going to treat them for some eating hay only every now and again.

Is Meadow ok to use as a main hay? I thought that it was too soft for gnawing down teeth? Herbage is not going anywhere with my six and soon to be eight it will be gone even quicker! ;D Think Meadow, mixed with herbage or a bit of Timothy will be cost effective for me from now on. :)

It's absolutely fine - mine is fairly course anyway. Having used Oxbow timothy I can quite clearly state I will never, ever feed them that brown junk that P@H like to call timothy!

Brill thanks. :) I'll order a load from Sally tomorrow I'm stocking up so I never go short. P@H Hay is terrible, I've had worse though with stones in absolutely terrible and it stunk! :tickedoff:

I don't mind paying out for Hay though, as it is so important. :D

What hay are you buying from Sally? :D Also any ideas how much hay 1kg is? I can't imagine how much it would be. I think I might order some of those sample packs from the hay experts.

I'm not sure how much 1kg, I was going to order some various small bags Mountain Hay, Timothy etc and see which ones they like. I don't think Sunshine likes Herbage, Twinkle however loves it! ::)

I got a bag in P@H once that was mouldy. Fair enough, it happens, so I returned it. The store employee wouldn't believe me so I insisted she take out a handful and sniff it. Needless to say when she got a nose full of damp hay and fungal spores my refund and a complimentary bag of non-mouldy hay swiftly came my way!

I just bought 10 bags of dust free hay from http://www.dustfreehay.co.uk/ for £40 delivered next day to my door. I split the delivery in to 5 soft hay and 5 stalkier, its lovely green hay (thats £4.00 a bag) my piggies :smitten:

I use P@H hay for bedding and then they get Excel Herbage hay for eatting - although they'll happy munch away on the bedding that's been put down for them.

Sorry Jane, I cant take any pics the lead to my phone is broke and i dont know where my digital camera is lol

I'll measure the bag though if you want?

I paid £6.50 i think for the 1kg and i think its good value, nice a green too - the bunny delight is mountain hay with plaintain, marshmallow and marigold i think my lot love that and the 500gm bag is huge too!

I have 8 guineas and I get my hay from www.dustfreehay.co.uk
I have never had a bad bale yet. They do 5 small bales for £29.99, 10 small bales for £39.99 or you can get one very large bale (equivelant to 7-8 small bales) prices include delivery which is next day if you order before 12 noon. I get the 10 bales as it is the most cost effective and it does my guineas for about 2-3 months and I am generous with it. I was allergic to all the other hays I tried, never had a sneeze with this one :)
I buy oxbow timothy hay or excel herbage for their hay racks.

Thanks, I would really appreciate it if you could measure the 1kg bag for me :D (and the 500gm bag would be helpful too if that's okay). How long do you think the 1kg bag will last you?

LJ - How long does a bale last you?

I can't find my tape measure now! ;D

well it comes just over above my knee does the bag which is approx 2/3 of the length of a nero 3 deluxe cage (my piggies were having a good nosey as i measured the bag agaisnt the cage lol) and is quite wide, its mucg bigger of a bag than i expected it to be. the 500gm bag is half the size of that but still bigger than what i was expecting, ive had it since friday last week i think and id say it will prob do me another week between 7 of them, I dont use this for the bedding i use a cheaper hay for that and they eat the mountain hay.

Ooh, it sounds good then! I was expecting it to be much smaller than that. Hm...so, 7 piggies = 2 weeks, 2 piggies = 7ish weeks? Sounds good, I think I will get some. :D

just under 2 weeks i think.. but also depends on how much your eat.. i give mine the bunny delight aswell so that bulks it out for a few more days.. but should last you a while between 2 piggies :)the hay comes in a really sterdy brown paper bag which will make an excellent toy when they hay is gone! :)

Jane, it lasts nearly 3 months and I worked it out that it costs about £3 a week, which is pretty good for 8 piggies :D

I get a bale of hay from our local horse shop, it's dusty though so i'm gonna get some from dustfreehay next week instead. They sleep on (meadow hay).
Then they eat Excel Herbage hay :D
