Hay

I use Pets at home but most people don't like it but my piggies seem to enjoy munching it! :))

There are different type of hay and also varieties of dried grass. Basically, hay is good for bedding as well as munching, dried grass (brand names like Readigrass or JustGrass) are shorter stalky bits, great for food but not so great as bedding.

Most 'pet' hay is dust extracted, there are different types of hay like Timothy Grass and varieties that have added things like dandelion etc.

I've got lots of pigs and I use bales of local hay from a horse-supplier but if you've got one or two pigs then a normal bag of petshop hay should do you. Take a look at Pampered Piggies website, they do all sorts of hay and herbs etc.

There is nothing wrong with good quality meadow hay. If you have a farm near to you, you can pick up a huge bale for £3-£4. I get mine from www.dustfreehay.co.uk it is super quality.

I also like to give mine American timothy hay and occasionally oat hay when I can get it. Only a handful in their basket though as its expensive!

Dont use hay that smells/feels damp as it harbours mould. I always find pet shop meadow hays quite poor quality and very dusty. The dustfree hay is lovely and fresh!

Posted at the same time as Sophie! yep, the Polish grown hay from PP is very nice too! Galens Garden also stock it.

Mine prefer Excel Herbage hay - they get through a bag a week (£3.19 I think). It's got a good mix of things in it but for Christmas we bought them a rabbit gift box of assorted hays and they loved the one with camomile in so I'm going to see if I can source some of that on a more regular basis.

Mine get the Excel Herbage too - mine go through a bag every 2 - 3 weeks. They love it and tend to turn their nose up at anything else. I've spoilt them too much.

Thats what they are their for, to be spoilt

Mine have had that too and I put some in a ball but they didnt really eat any of it just spread it everywhere and made a mess :))

I keep meaning to buy mine one of those ball thingy's to try to keep them amused - they have a hay rack just now and I'll stuff toilet rolls with hay too.

Yeah it keeps my piggies amused and I love watching them stand up on 2 legs to get to it, flashing their bellies :)):))

We put herbs in the ball thing - it's fab watching them demolish a well stuffed ball in seconds! The squealing and squeaking starts as soon as you ring the bell then they're climbing up the sides of the cage trying to see what you're putting in it!

Aww bless them

We got our boys those ball for Xmas and stuffed them full of timothy hay - it was so funny watching them yanking the hay out but running away from the ball when it swung back at them!

Orchard Grass is the favourite here. Timothy goes down well but I'm allergic to it. Meadow is the most common but the least favoured.

Mine love herbage excel and get through 3 bags a week :) I put the hay in a small log cabin with the lid off. Holly likes to stick her whole head in to get the best bits and Poppy likes to push her head through the doorway :) They can all gather round it nicely.

Soft hay is best for bedding, and stalkier has higher feed value. Stuff like Graze-On, Just Grass and Readigrass shouldnt be fed too much as its high in calcium.:)
