Hi all,

What hay do you all feed your pigs? Jack doesn't seem to like eating his excel herbage timothy hay with herbs. I dont know where there's a pet shop to get different stuff in. Can I order some off the internet?

hi

Pamperedpiggies online and the hay experts are just a couple

The Bob Martin one from Asda is ok, mine eat loads. Like Minty's though, it can sometimes be a bit bitty cos it's cut short. x

Mine tend to like nothing expensive, just bog standard cheapest hay I can find, I normally get mine from P&H or WCF but doubt there is many of them about. I tried my girls on the hay cubes/biscuits today and they loved them

I used to use P@h hay, but over the years I have found loads of stuff in it, like a ocuple of times I've found bits of bin bark and shards of sharp wood, so I switched to Excel Herabge which they loved, but its gone up in price, so I've switched to Super Forage which they seem to like better than Herbage, because it has no dandelions in it.

My lot are on Just Grass at the moment due to it being heat treated as they all had mites from the hay they were on, its £8 for a huge bag :)

I was thinking about hay today my new boy tiger has shown no signs of eating hay in last couple of days but he could have done whilst I wasn't looking :)) I have tried him today on P@h timothy hay hopefully he will enjoy the expense! :)) Possibly considering hay cakes are they as good as normal hay or do they have lots of rubbish in them?

He is currently eating science selective which contains alfafa (only dry food he will eat out of three I have tried) he is a baby so guess alfafa is ok is he maybe getting enough hay from that? is that the reason he seems uninterested in hay?

Hay cakes are good as treats, they are pure compressed hay, but pigs do need the longer strands of 'free hay' for proper dental wear.

My own pigs love Alfalfa King and Oxbow varieties. Expensive tastes. rolleyes But I do feel it's worth it and (when my finances eventually get sorted) I will be switching them over to Oxbow Orchard Grass and possibly Dust Free Hay exclusively. Bulk buying saves a ton of money!

Mine love the Excel herbage hay but unfortunately I've been a bit poor so they have been getting rubbish hay, although there is still readigrass so I mix that in with it. Hopefully on payday I'll be able to get them the herbage hay

I get my hay from a friend who has a field, it smells lovely and it doesn't get sprayed with pesticides. I bake her a cake for 2 big bales, she won't take any money for them. My gang also love Readigrass, they love anything really : ), piggies by name piggies by nature :)

Mine have Canac meadow hay (i get this from local pet shop). my bunny wont eat that however so i got a taster pack from hay experts which has 6 different varieties of hay in so you can try them on a few and see which one they take to! Also hay cakes are a good way of getting hay into them and its fun for them to get it apart!

I have a silly question! Do you use the same hay for eating as you do for filling the hutch/bed areas? I have always put a load of hay in their bed area every morning and evening and now have been filling a hay rack in the downstairs area of their hutch. Am I doing the right thing?

K.

Hi, yes i did use the same for both but now i have them on vetbed so they just have hay in the rack. Your piggies must be eating lots of hay!

Just your normal hay from the pet shop.. Nothing special but i make sure the hay is long and not stalky or dusty. I had a piggy that poked her self in the eye so that taught me a lesson!

I went into pets at home the other day as i got to the pet shop too late and their hay its terrible! Its mostly dust...:(

I don't - I like to use the normal hay from the pet supply store for their bedding and then something a little extra nicer like Excel herbage for the rack. However, just recently they've just been getting the normal hay for both but I don't like to do that - although they do eat their bedding anyway.

I give my guinea pig hay from pets at home he loves it and he is healthy

whats wcf? sorry if that's a silly question

My lot wont eat from a hay rack and i use the same hay for bedding and feeding...

They are perfectly fine and as long as they can burrow, make tunnels and eat hay whilst covered in the stuff and lying down then they are happy...:)) (they are easily pleased my lot...)

think that might be tigers problem, george has always eaten from a hayrack though. I have started to put a bit on the ground for them to eat but it does get messy as they live on vet bed!

Mine are on towels at the moment (waiting to order the Pro-Fleece) and I found that putting a plastic litter tray in the corner with some bedding and hay in it helps a lot, although it's unfortunate for Dite that she may be laying under the hay, innocently having a snack, and all of a sudden have Caramel pull the hay off. But it really reduces the mess on the rest of the floor and makes the cage much easier to clean. I can hardly wait until I can get the fleece and won't have to do it every day.
