Guys, a quick warning.

I keep my hay (Oxbow Orchard Grass) according to the instructions listed on Guinea Lynx. It's stored inside in a ventilated area, removed from the bag and kept in the box it arrived in with holes punched into it for added circulation to prevent it from becoming mouldy.

When I get to the end of one box I mix my hay (high quality with a lower quality) and keep it in the box. When lifting up the orchard grass (which I do not separate) I found it was damp. {:|

If you store your hay inside and you've found the weather to be sticky inside as well as outside, might I suggest that you give your hay box a quick flip to make sure everything's well underneath.

Dampness, if left, will make your hay mouldy and can make your piggies sick.

Good to know, thanks for the warning.

I use the same hay (Oxbow Orchard Grass), I buy it in 22kg boxes but don't do anything to it, I just open the box and work through it. I've not had any problems not removing the bag but I can see the potential issues.

Where do you get it from?

Becky, I buy from either The Hay Experts or SPH Supplies. Hay Experts are marginally cheaper if you are only buying the hay, it comes to about £70 including postage. I *think* it is about £4 or £5 more to buy from SPH Supplies.

A 22kg box lasted my 10 pigs two months exactly, they were fed it exclusively so we did get through a lot of hay each day. I would have spent the same amount of money for that amount of much lower quality hay, so it works out a reasonable price for such good quality hay when you do buy in bulk.

The one I have just now is the 4.05kg one (I don't remember spending £50 or more on hay :)) I've been buying smaller batches because I often mix hay-types to confuse and irritate my pigs who seem to reject anything which isn't Orchard or Timothy hay (grass). I tend to box anything which is in a bag that I've opened since I'm inside and the flat has mould issues which means I'm more concerned about air circulation.

Apparently the dehumidifier beside the hay helped >.<
