should guinea pigs have a certain kind of hay? i get mine from a local supplier who does animal foods and hay for horses. its fresh and not dusty. is that alright or not? thanks

It's up to you what kind of hay you give them, as long as they have hay. Some people prefer to give their guinea pigs special or specially enriched hay, but good quality basic hay does as well!

Knowing the type of hay you have is useful, although most are perfectly suitable for feeding in unlimited quantities. Legume hays - such as alfalfa - are too high in calcium and protein for adult pigs, so you need to be aware if the hay contains alfalfa. Legume hays are normally marked, and most local suppliers/farm shops will sell meadow or timothy hay by the bale, so it is very likely that you have a normal grass hay which is ideal to feed.

Meadow, timothy, orchard grass, rye, oat and brome are all types of grass hay. The greener the hay the better, so do go with the highest quality you can find and afford. A combination of hays will encourage a higher intake of hay, which is good for digestion and dental wear.

Mine get the cheapest hay I can find for bedding (which they eat too) and I put better quality hay in their rack - at the moment they are getting Burns green oat hay. They go mad for it.

If you want to get some cheap good quality hay, I suggest you go to your local stable/riding school, and buy some from there. It's £3 for a massive bale from my riding school. :) xxxxx

My pigs love 'My Little Friend' hay from the Asda. Around a fiver for a big bale. They go nuts when they hear the bag coming.

Farm hay has a lot more value for money. And the hay is fresh and is comfortable for the guinea pigs to lie on :)

i dont think i have any farms near by:( I'm sure the hay (if any) that they supplied would be a lot better in quality and cheaper. i use timothy hay from :)>>>pet stores:)>>>. vomiting directed to pet stores >:]

I'm skint at the minute but as soon as I have saved up I am going to buy a small metal shed for piggie stuff! I have megazorb and food in minute in a damp shed :( It's all wrapped up and food is still in bags and then in a plastic bin but when I get my shed I am going to buy bales and keep them in a bin also and have a small amount in the house - can't wait!
