I've never had a problem with the quality of the hay I bought from pet shops, it seemed quite good, though I'm no expert on it, the guinea-pigs ate it all and seemed quite happy. The pet shop I go to only has the small bags so I normally get 2 which lasts my 6 guinea-pigs 1 week. Yesterday I went into the pet shop and saw a big bag of hay so I thought I'd get it and it's rubbish. I was pulling some out last night and got some thorns in my finger and found big sticks with thorns all over them. I can't get hay until tommorow (and I might not even be able to get some then but I'll try) and I've spent ages sorting through the hay and putting it in a different box, seperating the thorns and the nettles and sticks from the hay, it's annoying because it takes a long time, my hands now hurt from the thorns and I've paid £3 for a bag of thorns. I know it's not much money, but it's £3 that's been wasted!

If you can take it back if not contact them as it sounds like sweepings! I get a bale once a month from a feed oplace and so far its been good quality makes the car smell sweet!

Take it back to the shop. Probably all the bags are like that but at least you can get your money back on that bag and buy your usual hay. I'm sure they don't want to lose your custom if you regularly buy your hay there. If its a new supply then they may want to know that the quality isn't up to much and they won't stock it in future otherwise I am sure they will have more complaints.

i would take it back they shouldn't be nasty as if gets around their selling rubbish no one will but it

i got my hay friday night & the girls told me about another one they had in hopefully it'll last a bit longer it smells great & so far the boys are loving it lol xx

That's terrible. I got a bag once with a couple of thorn branches but it was only a couple this sounds much worse! I would def take it back!

My last hay bale from Pets at Home wasn't nice, very green, doesn't smell right, I'm sneezing and the pigs are scratching and there was a penguin bar wrapper in the woodshavings! I've gone off Pets at Home very quickly!

Thanks to everyone on this site with recommendations for hay and bedding. I've just ordered some Timothy Hay from the Hay Experts, shampoo from Gorgeous Guineas and am off to get some fleece tomorrow. By tuesday they should be bathed and in a fresh new bed! They're now happily tearing up the newspaper and snuggled up in a towel! Thank goodness they've got nice dandilion herbage to eat!

Yeh we get ours from pets at home and iv had thorns stuck in my figer before.

I've occassionally had a problem with the hay I have bought from pet shops. Usually it's that the hay is more straw like in texture which my piggies never find comfy to lie on and never seem to enthusiastic to eat it either. I always have a good look at the bag as best I came to see if it's good quality. Look for a nice texture with, as you said, no thorns or 'sticks' and personally I find the richer and darker the hay they more my piggies like it.

Definately get a refund though! I did for mine and they didn't argue!

It wasn't pets at home hay and I don't know if it was pettex, there isn't a label on the bag. I can get some different hay from the pet shop near my school tommorow but I can't return the bad hay until Saturday because I don't get home until 5 because I walk my neighbours dog. I hope they'll still take it back. The man in the petshop asked me to tell me what I thought and what the guinea-pigs thought because it's a new supplier, like you've all suggested I'll tell him about the sticks and thorns, I don't want my guinea-pigs, or anyone else's pets to get hurt.
