We were getting hay from down town but we think its the sorce of the mites and lice, so i've ordered some compressed hay from pets at home. has anyone had any luck with this regards hay mites? as I cant afford expensive hay.
thanks x

I think its something to do with the way the hay is stored. I rescued a guinea pig from a pet shop i worked in...i smuggled him out in box, he had a terrible mite problem and looked soo poorly.

I am not keen on the pre-packed hay just because its alot shorter and sometimes really prickly, and theres all that dusty stuff at the bottom of the bag.

I used to buy pre-packed but it turned outt really expensive, and i found there was a lot of wastage. I now buy hay from the local feed supply, i buy a whole bale (with 9 piggies it gets eaten really quick). They let you pick your own bale - so you can smell it so you know its smells good, and touch it so you know its not damp etc.

I hope you find hay that is suitable for your piggies soon.

Thank you :) unfortunatly it has to be pre packed for us as we have no car and no way of getting to these places. I wish we could go and get our own
:( it is expensive isnt it?! we have 6 so I cant imagine how much 9 would be. We do spoil them:)) thanks for the advice.

Hi I have a mite/lice problem with my piggies after buying meadow hay.... it was suggested to me that you could bag it into small bags and give it a blast in the microwave *** that will kill any mites/lice and eggs that are in the hay. I tried it gave it a blast for 1 minute as I wasnt told how long to do it for, although it gave off a strange aroma, the piggies ate it. It gets a bit damp so you have to take it out the bag * zapped it in straight away and shake it to cool quickly.

You can buy hay from zooplus.de (the german site) and it's good and cheap and gets delivered to your door. If you have somewhere to store it you can buy 14kg bags! My piggies love it so much.

That's exactly my thought too ;) I prefer compacted hay, buy the timothy hay in the same way, don't mind the waste, it just shows you have contented piggies :)

My lot are bedded on Pets at Home hay. I have never had any problems with it.

Some batches can be stalkier than others (you may find the odd twig in there) but generally, I'm happy with it. I try to pick out the packs which look greener and have smaller pieces :)

They tend to pick out bits to eat (they have Oxbow hay in their hay rack too rolleyes ) and almost always popcorn when they have fresh bedding so they pigs must think it's pretty okay too ;)

Thank you everyone. PAH hay it is then. hopefully goodbye to crawlies:))

Our piggies have the packed Timothy Hay from Pets at Home and we've never had a problem with it, not keen on the own pets at home brand though, but thats just me. Also get the Burgess Excel Forage from there too.

I have ordered some different Hay online and it looked awful, put me off ordering online. Can't remember the site I got it from, can anyone recommend a good site?

i buy the dust free hay from animals magic supplies :)

Organic hay

Hi
I live in Kidsgrove and have an organic hay bale delivered once a month for £6. I have never had any skin problems with my piggies and they are treated with ivermectin every 3 months.
The hay is lovely PM me if your interested.
Thanks
