Tallulah has been sneezing alot the last few days. She did have a snotty nose so I thought it could be the start of URI or something but she is fine otherwise. Although she did have some crust around her eye but she has always got that now and then so probably just coincidence.

Because its Spring I was just wondering, could it be hayfever? Mines been getting worse past few days also...

I believe that hay fever is very common at this time of year from the early pollens. I have never had a pig with it but I know others have seen it in their pigs. A drop of OLBAS OIL near the nose of the animal is said to be effective. A vet might advise.

hi

heya hope the wee darlin is ok, but you **** take it to the vets, it does sound like the start of an upper respiratory infection, the guinea pig is good at holden back illness untill its to late! my guinea pig is on antibiotics at the moment treating uri, he was eating fine then all of a sudden his breathing went wezzy, baytril didnt respond to the infection the vet gave him a diff 1 and he has responded well :) i had to force feed him at start but he is slowly but surely recovering. put olbas oil on a towel over top of cage or towel in cage try not to use bedding like wood shaving because you need to check if he/she is going to toilet prop, dont put it on nose as it can be strong on there wee skin, put towel over cage so no draughts are getting in, you can even have a hot water bottle in but make sure ther is space in cage or him/her to move off if to warm, ( covered with towel) but normally a sick piggy is greatful for a little more warmth, if you need any more answers you can contact me :) dont worry to much if you catch anything early your piggy can get treated and fight it of :) good luck hope all is ok and goes well xx

It can be tough to determine whether it's hayfever or a respiratory infection. Generally if the pig has symptoms for a while and the pig is not deteriorating otherwise, then allergy could be blamed. But can you risk waiting and watching? The answer for most owners is no, in which case you'll visit a vet, who will likely prescribe antibiotics for a respiratory infection. If the antibiotics have no effect and the pig does not get worse, then allergy is more likely.

Have to say I'm suffering badly wih hayfever at the moment too, seems strange as I was fine with the pigs Timothy hay through winter but as soon as the weather started warming up, the eyes and nose set off straight away. Will be an Orchard Grass summer again I think! No reason to think why the pigs may not be suffering from it too.

Me too, its a bit early though! i am constantly suffering, didn't sleep at all last night, it has got worse since the timothy hay arrived, definitely orchard grass for us from now on.

This is the tree pollen season - it may be that that's giving you grief.

Definitely buds and leaves on the trees here, still early days but if you look closely there is actually a lot happening now, plenty of flowers coming out too. :)

Alder trees flower from Jan.-March and their pollen is quite a common allergen - presumably the season works its way North. My horticultural consultant is out at the moment; he would know what's actually flowering.

Birch, hazel and horse chestnut also flower early. I put my daughter on industrial-strength antihistamines in January, in preparation for the onslaught, as hay fever triggers her asthma.

chesney has started sneezing more. same time as last year! had him checked out twice for it but there isn't anything wrong. he is just a sneezy hayfevery piggy!
