He Ate The String Of My Pants

i was laying on the couch with my guinea pig by my side as I was watching videos on my phone. I heard a loud chewing noise and looked over at him. The top of the string of my pants had been chewed off. I immediately forced his mouth open and managed to get a piece out. However, I don't know if he swallowed a part. He seems to be eating fine, but he continuously makes a chewing sound. I'm not sure if he's having trouble with a string (if it is inside then it's past his tongue) or if I'm just overreacting.

Guinea pigs like all rodents don't have a vomit reflex, so what as gone in has to come out the other end. Usually eating string, ribbons etc. doesn't cause any problems, but please keep an eye on your guinea pig for the next 24 hours and see a vet asap as an emergency if it suddenly looks in major pain (fur standing up, hunched up) or is suddenly apathetic/off its food.

Please don't worry ! I doubt if he has done himself any harm. Please keep an eye on him and make sure he is eating his veggies and hay OK. As long as he eats and poos normally - I'm sure he'll be fine.


As Wiebke has already said, keep an eye on him and make a vet appointment if concerned.

At least you'll know in future to keep non Guinea Pig items well out of his reach !

I hope we see pictures soon as he sounds like he's a lovely character.

He's certainly looking a bit sheepish there! I think he knows he shouldn't have tried to eat it. We had a member in a similar situation recently so just keep an eye on him and make sure he is eating, drinking and pooping normally and hopefully he will be fine.

Awwww, pesky piggy. Don't worry too much this has happened to us all in some form or others.... ours once munched holes in plastic sheet
