My 5 month old guinea pig Cookie always does this little tweeting just like a bird, but manly when we hold him, my other piggie makes a typical guinea pig noise. It's like Cookie has no voice box...is it because his still young?:o

Could you record it at all? Is it like this:

If so, it's an on-going debate what piggy people believe it means :))

Personally, I don't see it as being a sound a happy pig would make. My girl Rose will make it when I handle her now, only very slightly though, but she is absolutely petrified of me. And the other time I've heard one of mine make it was my other girl Megan, when she was pregnant, she made that noise a lot so I believe it's a distress type call, personally.

Edit: This isn't my video by the way, I just found it on YouTube, plus look at the body language of the pig making the noise and the pigs it's with. The pig making the noise is alert, stood up-right, not relaxed at all, and the other pig on the far right doesn't look that comfortable, and the little one, well it seems curious to know what's above them lol, but same, they're not acting relaxed or 'happy' as such.

Nope it's not like that, he does very suttle so not very constant at all, and pretty quiet...but it's pretty cutexoxo The vet said it signs of a cold? Which i don't really believe as his on anti biotics.

My bruce was doing this after a very bad fight with another boar (i wasn't around at the time and found him chirping like a bird in the corner of his cage with blood on his nose :( )

I always thought they did this during a stressful situation but other websites have claimed its a happy sign :^-

Ohhh that's terrible:( Cookie does it when his on people's lap, holding him up, even when his having a treat!

Is it more huffy? Like at the end of the video? It's what my Rose does, but it's the same sound anyway. She doesn't do the full blown call, just the huffy, breathy bit at the end of the video.

And they wouldn't make any sound if it was a 'cold' :{ could you post a clip of him doing it?

And he would have a voice box lol, my Jasper doesn't talk at all unless I'm grooming him and it pulls a little, but he's got breathing problems (he was born with them) so I guess it limits his space and energy to make a noise as well and doesn't bother.

Ok, I've just had a think, is this coming from his nose or his mouth? Put the top of his nose against your ear and listen when he does it. If its coming from there then it's his respiratory.

I have a piggy who I have heard makes this noise a couple of times in the past. I have been told it is a very rare sound for a piggy to make and it is normally when they are in season. The last time I heard Pippa doing this I sneaked a look in and she was standing to attention chirping away. She normally seems to do make the sound in the middle of the night/early morning. Maybe she thinks she is a bird after all but she certainly didnt' seemed distressed. LOL.

His with me now, sounds like his nose!

And he makes that noise when he's breathing in and out, rather than it being a pig noise?

Sounds like we've found the culprit lol, I'd say then your vet was right, it's because of his 'cold', well is he being treated for an URI? That's generally what a piggy cold would be.

That noise is rare, and I'm pretty glad knowing what I think of it. I can't emphasise enough that you have got to look at their body language as well to understand exactly what they're saying.

You state your pig was 'standing to attention', that's not relaxed is it? A relaxed piggy noise along with the relaxed piggy body language is completely different to that.

The quick repetitiveness of the call, the way they hold their heads, they're always stood still and just seem to stare with their bodies bolt upright, it doesn't say 'I'm happy' to me. They don't walk around, they don't try to interact with others they're with, even their owner.

Sorry, I could rant about this til I was blue in the face but you just have to be a little more logical about this.

Blimey! I just played that cluip and my 2 older boars are not too happy! They have stood to attention listening carefully.

I have never heard a piggy making that noise myself but I can see what you mean - they aren't relaxed at all are they? i would be concerned if my lot were looking that wary...

Hope your Cookie gets over his cold very soon anyway! I have a Cookie too - he is very naughty!
