We don't currently have any piggies, but are in the process of building a C&C cage ready for a home inspection from our local rescue.

Due to the space we have available, we've opted to custom build a 3x3 main area with grids from Wayfair. We've also put a 3x1 loft area at the back. Due to the span we figured it would be a good idea to use something to support the free edge of the grids at the front of the loft and have used some angle section extruded aluminium (is that the right name?). In terms of sturdiness its worked very very well.

Just been looking at it, though, and I'm fretting. It seemed necessary to put the loft a full grid up (worried the ramp would be too steep) so we aimed for a floor at 5/9 instead. In order to fit the angle section neatly it hangs down a bit below that. Head clearance below the support is now about 16 cm. Is that too low?

Can someone give me a sanity check? Logically the opening is still significantly higher than the openings into lots of hidies, so it should be fine - but I'm second guessing myself... We could only source black correx locally so between the two floors it isn't bright, which probably doesn't help. I also tend to overthink things . Whilst it would be really annoying to move it up, we'd far rather do that now whilst its all empty and we can fiddle around.

Help!

Go to guinea pig cages online and look at those pictures also try buying plastic grid connectors also Pinterest should have some good cage ideas

They will learn to duck under the angle section like they do the hidies. My only concern would be to doubly make sure the metal isn't sharp anywhere in case they forget themselves and popcorn under the loft - yes mine did do that a couple of times at first! My loft is at 5/9 but with nothing hanging below that, if you're really concerned could you go to 6/9. There's a couple of photos here of lofts. Waiting Impatiently For My Wayfair C&c Grids

Thank you all! DH has been most rigorous at filing edges and trimming cable ties. If we were starting again I'd probably have put the loft a square higher, but I'm sure it'll be fine. If I can work out how to do it I'll add some photos. We think all the structural work is done to the point that some piggies could move in, although we want to add some more supports underneath and a lid (also thinking of using perspex or similar on the front so that its easier to keep and eye on them, hence no correx there right now).

In terms of bedding, etc, that's still a work in progress. I've put in some blankets we had lying around to make it look less funereal and DD is very excited to go fleece shopping, bless her :D.

Piggieminder - I've been following your thread avidly. Your new cage already looks amazing and when the new grids arrive it'll be even more so! And the loft pictures that have been posted are very reassuring, too. We added the support as had reservations that cable ties alone wouldn't support the middle grid. Whether needed or not, I'm pretty certain our loft is certainly not going to collapse now, lol.

(OK - a few cable ties left to trim and some better fastenings for the front. We wanted the centre front panel to hinge for easier access and need to get some suitable clips)

That looks lovey. I’m sure they will like it.
