My older guinea pig sometimes starts crying and shows a bit of a head tilt. It always tilts to the right, but it normally doesn't last longer than a couple of minutes. When it happens, he just stands there crying but once it goes away he goes off as if nothing had happened. We have been to the vet, he checked his ears and gave him a muscle relaxant. (don't know if this is the right word) We got the piggie in November last year and he's had this ever since January or February, which was when we took him to the vets (I think that by then it had happened at least once.) Since then, he's only had them a few times.. Once every two months, I believe.
Then suddenly, this Wednesday, he had it again. Then on Thursday and Friday too, around the morning feeding time. Yesterday, he had it twice, and today around 10am too. The problem is that if I take him to the vet, he will probably say that it's nothing again. I could try a different one but my mum works nearly everyday and I don't have transportation there. However, if it really is needed, I'm sure we'll be able to go there.
I just wanted to know... Have any of you ever experienced this, do you have any hints as to what is happening? Should I take him to the vets again? He's eating, pooping and peeing fine, he gets along with his cage mate fine, except for the occasional row. We thought it might be tooth ache but he eats normally and seems perfectly healthy except for that... Mites were an option too but his fur is fine, and he hasn't been scratching more than normal.
Apologies for any horrible English mistakes.

Did the vet check his ears? Often an ear infection can cause head tilt. It sounds like the vet does not have much knowledge about guinea pigs. Are there any vets there which do understand guinea pigs?

Yes, he did check his ears, because we suspected it was an ear infection from the start. I don't think there are many guinea pig savvy vets around here. I know there is a clinic that specialises in small animals but it's on the other side of the country. :/

That is worrying. There must be something wrong for him to tilt his head like that. :(

He seems perfectly fine, save for the occasional head tilt. We haven't changed his pellets, hay etc. We've moved to a new house a month ago but I think that wouldn't cause the head tilt now. :/ Mum thinks it might also be Barney biting him, but I've never seen any blood and it's happened before we got Barney, so I don't know. I'm honestly at a loss here, I've searched all over the internet and got nothing.

My Rodney had head tilt 2 weeks ago & I rushed him to the vet who wanted to put him down. Said he's had a stroke or brain bleed.

I opted for anti biotics in the hope it was infection & by the time I got him home he was fine! Ran off in a huff! Not happened since.

He didn't have pain tho.

Vet couldn't see ear infection but italy have been deep routed, or he may have had a mini stroke & just recovered! Don't kno!

Maybe some anti biotics will help x

Head tilt is normally a symptom
a) ear mites and/or
b) bacterial infection of the ear

It could also, from your description of your particular piggie, be a complication of a toot root issues/abcess so well worth checking teeth and Xray with a cavy savvy vet.

Sorry I can;t be of more help
x

Thanks Pebble, that does help a lot. :) Unfortunately, the closest vet is two hours away... I'll see what I can do, though. I've taken a look at their website and liked the look of it. I can't take him this week though but I'll see about doing so next week, I still have to talk to mum about it. If she doesn't want to take him I might be able to get a lift and take him myself. In the meantime, I'll keep an eye on the piggie. He does seem fine now, there hasn't been any head tilting today, but I'll keep a close look.

There hasn't been any tilting nor pain since Monday... I'll still try to get him to the vets next week, I found a quite close one that has some experience with guinea pigs. I just think it strange that my other vet didn't manage to find anything, he did examine Quinhas's ears. :/

I spoke too soon. He had it twice today, and the second time it was much worse. Today we went to an exotic pet shop that I really like to buy two fishies, and we asked the owners what they thought. They suggested epilepsy and gave us the contact to their vet, it's too far, though. Right now mum and I are calling pretty much every vet clinic on the yellow pages to see if there is any that take exotics.

EDIT: Just got off the phone right now, there aren't any nearby clinics. We'll have to travel by train and subway to get to the pig-savvy vet. Is that too stressing for Quinhas? He's fine with car rides, he even loves them.
